BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia remained in seventh place on a tight team leaderboard at the SEC Women's Golf Championships following Thursday's second round. The Bulldogs enter the final round of stroke play qualifying three strokes above the cut for an eight-team match play bracket for Saturday and Sunday.
"This time of year, you'd love to be in first but also, you're trying to get a tee time for Saturday for match play," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We're in a position where we control our own destiny. If you look at what we've done the past two years during the NCAAs at Regionals and nationals, we've thrived. We're right where we want to be. Now, we need to just go play tomorrow."
The Bulldogs shot 16-over at Greystone Golf and Country Club under blustery conditions that pushed scores higher than a day earlier. After 13 of 14 teams broke 300 in the first round, only two did so on Thursday.
Candice Mahé led Georgia for the second straight day with a 3-over 75. The Bulldogs rounded out their counting scores with a pair of 76s from Caterina Don and Jo Hua Hung and a 77 from Jenny Bae.
Don's loop was incredibly steady. She recorded 16 pars but blemished her day with double-bogeys at No. 5 and No. 11.
"I think it was a really rough day out there," Don said. "The wind was blowing. It was switching directions. The rain was coming in waves. I think 16 pars gives me a little hope for tomorrow because it's good golf. I just need a few more putts to drop and leave those two mistakes away."
Mahé and Hung are tied for 10th and 15th, respectively, in the individual field. Mahé is at 2-over 146 and Hung is at 5-over 149. Bae is tied for 24th at 151, Don is tied for 37th at 153 and Caroline Craig, who shot 80 on Thursday, is tied for 54th at 156. Auburn's Megan Schofill is the individual leader at 5-under 139.
No. 3 LSU surged to the team lead with the tournament's low round of the day, a 6-over 294. The Tigers are at 586, three strokes clear of No. 7 Auburn. After that, 11 shots separate third and 12th places, with No. 4 South Carolina at 595; No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 19 Vanderbilt at 596; No. 5 Mississippi State at 597; the Bulldogs at 598; No. 21 Florida at 599; Kentucky at 601; Alabama at 602; No. 16 Ole Miss at 604; and Tennessee at 606.
"I think that's why you come to Georgia. That's why you come to the SEC," Don said. "You want to come here to compete. You don't want to come here and win easy. You want to fight to win. To win in such stacked field is so much better than going out and winning easily. It's never easy to win, but winning the SEC just means more."
Brewer said his team's game plan would remain the same on Friday and focus solely on the Bulldogs performance for the most part.
"You just have to go play golf," Brewer said. "It might change the last hole or the last two holes depending on where things are. You go play. We're playing well, and we'll look to continue that trend tomorrow."
Georgia will be paired with Florida and Kentucky for Friday's third and final round of stroke play qualifying. The Bulldogs, Gators and Wildcats will tee off in 10-minute intervals from No. 1 between 10:40-11:20 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
The match play bracket will feature the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday. Saturday's semifinals will be available via SEC Network+, and the championship will air live on the SEC Network.
