Hopkins Finishes 20th on 1-meter to Open Zones

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Rhett Hopkins turned in a solid performance Sunday afternoon as the University of Georgia men's diving team began competition at the 2023 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
After not participating in Zones last season, Hopkins finished 20th on 3-meter with a score of 298.60, posting Georgia's top score in the first event of the meet. Hopkins ranked 29th following his first two dives but worked his way back up the standings with two 60-point scores on his final three dives, nearly earning a place in the 18-person finals.
Elsewhere on 1-meter, graduate Kevin Li placed 23rd with a score of 293.80, closing strong with a 66.30 on his final attempt. Sophomore Allen Mann finished 32nd with a mark of 263.25, tallying a 54.60 on his second dive. In the overall standings, Bryden Hattie of Tennessee took first in his home pool with a score of 780.70, following a first-place mark of 379.75 in prelims.
Zones continue Monday with the women's 1-meter prelims at 11 a.m. Junior Meghan Wenzel and freshman Hannah Stumpf will compete for Georgia, with Wenzel looking to earn her second-consecutive NCAA berth on the springboard. The men's 3-meter follows at 4 p.m. with sophomore Nolan Lewis joining Hopkins and Li in the event. Lewis previously finished ninth on 3-meter at both this year's NCAA Championships and last year's Zones in Atlanta.
