Magahey Takes Third in 500 Freestyle at NCAAs

MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Jake Magahey's seventh career trip to the NCAA podium highlighted the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team's second day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
 
Magahey placed third in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 4:09.24, earning First Team All-America honors and his third-consecutive top-three finish in the event. The Dacula native stood in seventh place through the first 300 yards before surging down the stretch, finishing the final 100 yards in 49.13. Magahey's time was the fifth-fastest of his collegiate career and eighth-fastest in program history.
 
In the closing 200 freestyle relay, senior Dillon Downing, sophomore Reese Branzell, senior Zach Hils, and senior Bradley Dunham finished 18th with a season-best time of 1:16.80, the third-fastest mark in school history. Downing led off with a 19.17, while Branzell posted the fastest split at 18.79.
 
During the prelims session, Downing finished 22nd in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.15, while Hils placed 23rd in the 200 IM with a time of 1:42.92. Graduate Andrew Abruzzo finished 39th in the 500 freestyle at 4:20.74. 
 
Through two days of competition, California leads the overall standings with 184 points, followed by Texas (165), Arizona State (154), and NC State (151.5). Georgia sits in 14th place with 36 points.
 
The NCAA Championships continue Friday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving, and 400 medley relay. In the 100 backstroke, Dunham is seeded 12th, followed by junior Wesley Ng in 14th. Senior Ian Grum is seeded 13th in the 400 IM, while Magahey ranks 15th in the 200 freestyle.
 
Swimming prelims begin at 11 a.m. EST, followed by diving prelims at 1 p.m. and finals at 7 p.m. Live coverage of the meet will stream on ESPN+, with live results available online and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
