Georgia Men Head to Minneapolis for NCAA Championships
March 21, 2023 | Men's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – Following a successful first season for Men's Swimming & Diving Head Coach Neil Versfeld, the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team heads to the 2023 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, running this week at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.
The meet opens in earnest Wednesday, March 22 with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays, followed by the full competition schedule on Thursday, March 23. For each day of action, prelims will begin at 11 a.m., followed by finals at 7 p.m. Live coverage of the meet will stream on ESPN+, with live results available to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
Eight members of the Georgia men's team qualified for the NCAA Championships, including graduate Andrew Abruzzo, seniors Dillon Downing, Bradley Dunham, Ian Grum, Zach Hils, juniors Jake Magahey and Wesley Ng, and sophomore Mitchell Norton. The Bulldogs' championships roster is boosted by four relay alternates: fifth-year senior Ananda Lim, junior Connor Haigh, sophomore Reese Branzell, and freshman Kristian Pitshugin.
Additionally, all five Bulldog relays will participate in the championships. With eight selections, Georgia tied for the 10th-most of any institution nationally and the fourth-most among SEC institutions.
Georgia looks to follow up last season's eighth-place finish in Atlanta, which featured Magahey finishing second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 1,650 freestyle. Seeded second in the 500 free, Magahey also won the NCAA title in the event at the 2021 meet. SEC champion Bradley Dunham is ranked sixth in 200 freestyle, joined by fellow senior Ian Grum as the No. 4 seed. Magahey and teammate Zach Hils were also part of last season's runner-up finish in the 800 freestyle relay, posting an SEC-record time of 6:05.59.
