Georgia Hosts Tennessee For Top 25 Matchup

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 10 University of Georgia men's tennis team will host a top 25 matchup against Southeastern Conference rival No. 18 Tennessee on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. ET at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Conference Play Continues
Georgia returns to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex for its third-straight home match to take on conference rival Tennessee on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs hold a 57-28 record against the Volunteers and most recently won on the road by a 4-2 score on March 20, 2022. Admission for all matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex is free of charge for all fans to attend.
Georgia has played against 11 ranked teams, going 7-4 in those matches. The team has four wins over top 25 teams so far.
The Bulldogs concluded a seven-match road trip with a pair of conference matches at home this past weekend. Georgia defeated No. 38 Texas A&M by a 5-2 score and swept No. 56 Vanderbilt, 7-0.
The Bulldogs currently sit atop the SEC standings as well at 4-0 in conference play. Georgia is one of three teams to finish in the top five of the SEC standings in each season since 2019 (Florida, Tennessee).
Diaz's Details
On playing against conference rival Tennessee…
"We've told the guys, every SEC match, you're playing for a conference championship, and tomorrow is no exception," said head coach Manny Diaz. "It's an important match for both teams, it's a great rivalry and we expect both teams to come out firing. It will be a very competitive and challenging match, but our guys are excited and well-prepared. We expect a good crowd, so it will be a great one."
On the lettermen returning and environment at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex…
"It's always great to see our lettermen come back. We should have a good following. Most of our players know our former lettermen, and they are proud of what our current players are doing. It should be a great atmosphere and a whole lot of fun for all of us."
Dawgs in the Rankings
In the latest team rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Georgia checked in as the No. 10 team in the country.
Redshirt freshman Ethan Quinn moved up to No. 2 in the singles rankings and is currently riding a five-match win streak with a pair of match-clinching victories. The Fresno, Calif. native is both the highest-ranked player in the conference and the only freshman to have multiple wins on court one. With Philip Henning climbing up to No. 15, Georgia becomes one of four schools to have multiple players in the top 15 of the singles rankings.
Blake Croyder, the team's leader in singles wins with 19, moved to No. 90. With 95 career singles wins, the redshirt senior is eight away from entering the top 20 in program history. Teodor Giusca rounds out the ranked Bulldogs in singles at No. 101, appearing in the rankings for the first time in the spring season. Giusca has won four of his previous five matches.
Trent Bryde and Quinn make up the top spot for Georgia in doubles and are ranked the No. 11 pair in the country in the latest doubles poll. This is the highest the two have been ranked together and the career-best ranking in doubles for Quinn. The tandem has won six matches this season on court one, including three point-clinching victories.
Clutch Clinching
In the four conference matches Georgia has played in, four different players have earned the match-clinching win in singles: Bryde against Alabama, Quinn against Auburn, Croyder against Texas A&M and, in his first dual match result of the season, Thomas Paulsell against Vanderbilt. In total, five different players have earned the winning point for Georgia in singles: Bryde with four, Henning and Quinn with two and Croyder and Paulsell with one.
Straight-Set Wins
Georgia has straight-set victories in 34 of the team's 50 dual-match singles wins, good for a clip of 68 percent of the team's singles wins. No. 90 Croyder leads the team, with seven of his eight wins coming in straight-set decisions. Of those 34 straight-set wins, 18 of them came in matches that were 6-4, 6-4 or better. No. 90 Croyder and Perez Peña have five, No. 15 Henning and No. 2 Quinn have four each, No. 101 Giusca has two and Paulsell has one.
Last Year, Best Year
Seven of Georgia's 10 wins this season have been clinched by seniors. Bryde has four, most recently clinching the team's win at No. 58 Alabama over Matias Ponce De Leon. Henning claims two, including the victory over Louisville's No. 36 Fabien Salle, earning the team a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships. Croyder picked up his first match-clinching win of the year with his singles win against Guido Marson in three sets.
In doubles, two pairs of redshirt seniors have manned courts two and three in each match this season. Giusca and Henning have five victories on court two, while Croyder and Britton Johnston have seven wins on court three. Croyder and Johnston lead the team in doubles wins together this year with 13.
Four of the six Bulldogs to have at least six wins in the dual match season are also seniors, with Bryde, No. 90 Croyder, No. 101 Giusca and No. 15 Henning all reaching the mark. No. 90 Croyder leads the team in dual-match singles wins with 10.
Scouting the Volunteers
Tennessee enters the match with Georgia ranked No. 18, moving up two spots from last week after a pair of 6-1 wins against No. 56 Vanderbilt and No. 40 LSU at home.
The Volunteers have a trio of players ranked in singles, led by No. 7 Johannus Monday who is 8-1 on court one. No. 62 Emile Hudd has played most of his matches at court two and holds a 4-0 record there, while No. 120 Shunsuke Mitsui has appeared on courts two and three but has played his recent matches at four, going 2-1 so far. Overall, the team is 0-2 when losing on court one and 1-4 when it drops the match on court five.
Tennessee features three ranked doubles teams, with Pat Harper and Monday currently sitting as the fourth-best pairing in the nation with an 8-1 mark on one. Mitsui and Hudd man court two, holding a 6-0 record and a No. 50 ranking.
