Georgia Falls to Southern California, 4-2
February 05, 2023 | Men's Tennis
LAKE NONA, Fla. – The University of Georgia men's tennis team lost to Southern California by a 4-2 result on Sunday morning at the United State Tennis Association National Complex.
No. 13 Georgia (3-3) would earn the doubles point with a win from No. 55 Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston and the clinching victory from Teodor Giusca and Philip Henning after the match was moved indoors. No. 106 Trent Bryde would go on to win his match in singles over No. 7 USC's (6-0) No. 65 Bradley Frye.
"Really proud of how our guys fought today," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We had an outstanding doubles point, with Teodor and Philip coming back from down 0-4 to clinch it. Our effort, intensity and chemistry are fantastic in that area right now. But USC seemed more comfortable than we did moving indoors. We had two matchups that we won head-on in the fall that didn't go our way today. We learned a lot and know that we can play better across the board, and we must to beat a team like USC. I'm encouraged with where we are. That said, we're not satisfied and know we can do a little bit better, but today was USC's day."
Giusca and Henning clinched the doubles point for the second time this season after a weather delay forced the match to be shifted indoors.
On courts one and three, the matches began without either side gaining much separation. No. 19 Trent Bryde and Ethan Quinn were unable to defeat 12th-ranked Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye, though, and fell by a 6-4 result.
On court three, No. 55 Croyder and Johnston managed to win their fifth match in a row, 6-4, and put the deciding match on court two. Giusca and Henning fell behind early, trailing 4-0, but rattled off five-straight games to take a 5-4 lead. The match was paused while tied at 5-5, and after a break where the match had to go indoors, the redshirt seniors prevailed and won by a 7-6(7) result.
The remainder of the matches were played indoors due to weather conditions, with three courts being utilized at a time. Top-ranked Quinn and No. 10 Henning were unable to defeat their opponents, and both suffered 6-3, 6-2 losses. Giuscawon his first set tiebreaker and also forced one in the second but was unable to win the match. With the trio of wins, Southern Cal would jump out to a 3-1 match lead.
No. 106 Bryde would grind out a three-set win over No. 65 Frye, picking up his fourth-consecutive singles match victory and putting the match score at 3-2. The redshirt senior improved to 11-5 following the weekend and is a perfect 4-0 at court four. However, No. 21 Croyder would drop the third set after winning the second, allowing the Trojans to clinch the match, 4-2. Thomas Paulsell would go unfinished on court six against Lodewijk Weststrate in his match.
Georgia will play its next match back in its home state, heading to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 12 at noon ET. The Bulldogs hold a 68-9 overall record against the Yellow Jackets, most recently defeating them at their home facility on Feb. 13, 2022, by a 4-3 result.
