QUICK HITS
Windy City Bound
The top-seeded Bulldogs won its Kickoff Weekend region, defeating No. 4 LSU and No. 2 Louisville to clinch a spot at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships. The team will head to Chicago to compete for the indoor national title starting on Feb. 17.
Georgia will seek its third title at the National Team Indoor Championships, with its previous two coming in 2006 and 2007. The Bulldogs have appeared in the finals seven times in total, which is tied for the fourth-most in the event's history.
The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has become a frequent spot as a regional site for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. This was the eighth time Georgia has been selected as a host site in the last 10 years and the 12th since 2009. This year, teams who ranked in the top-15 of the final ranking of the 2022 season were selected as the regional hosts for the event.
Diaz's Details
"As always, this is a huge match for both teams," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We're excited every time we play each other. It's normally a very contested rivalry match, and last year was no exception, which came down to the final singles match. Both programs are going to be ready and we're looking forward to heading up to Atlanta. Head coach Kenny Thorne is a great guy. I've known him for a while, as he was a player for Georgia Tech when I was an assistant coach here. He does a great job with their program, and I really respect what he's been able to do up there. We are hoping to see a big crowd of Bulldog nation and our former lettermen there to cheer us on and keep us on the right side of this rivalry!"
In-State Showdown
The rivalry between Georgia and Georgia Tech dates to their first match played in 1955. Sunday's contest will mark the 78th meeting between the two schools, with Georgia holding the series lead, 68-9. The Bulldogs have won each of the last 11 meetings, dating back to the 2012 season.
Dawgs in the Rankings
In the latest ITA rankings released on Wednesday, Georgia remained as just one of two schools with multiple singles players within the top 10. Redshirt freshman Ethan Quinn led the way for the Bulldogs, appearing at No. 5 in the first updated rankings released since Nov. 16, 2022. Redshirt senior Philip Henning reached a new career high by claiming the No. 8 spot. The Bloemfontein, South Africa native holds a 4-2 record on court two this season.
Blake Croyder and Trent Bryde round out Georgia's ranked singles athletes. No. 62 Croyder has played all six dual matches at the fifth position, going 3-2 thus far with two of his wins coming in straight sets. No. 87 Bryde has had an impressive start to the spring season from court four, holding a perfect 4-0 mark including a ranked win over USC's No. 65 Bradley Frye. With four ranked in singles, the Bulldogs are tied for the third-most included in the poll.
Georgia also had one doubles team earn a ranking in this week's poll, with Bryde and Quinn earning the No. 24 spot. The tandem has earned two wins together on court one, both of which clinched the doubles point for Georgia. Two of their losses in the spring season have come in a breaker.
Scouting the Yellowjackets
Georgia Tech is 6-3 this season, with its three losses coming at No. 18 Stanford, against No. 20 Pepperdine and at Auburn.
The team features two players in the latest ITA men's singles rankings, each within the top 100. No. 63 Andres Martin holds a 13-4 record on the year, going 7-2 on the Yellowjacket's top court. He previously played Teodor Giusca on Nov. 4, 2022, at the Georgia Tech Invitational, where he narrowly defeated the Bulldog in a three-set match. No. 89 Keshav Chopra has mostly played in the third position for the team, going 5-2 through the start of the spring. He played both Giusca and Thomas Paulsell and the GT Invitational, where both Georgia players were victorious in straight sets.
The lone doubles team ranked for Georgia Tech is No. 60 Martin and Marcus McDaniel, who are 6-1 together on court one this year. The Yellowjackets have earned the doubles point in six of their nine dual matches and are 5-1 in such instances.
Last Year, Best Year
All three of Georgia's wins this season have been clinched by seniors, with Trent Bryde winning to defeat LSU and Philip Henning clinching the victory over both Louisville, earning the team a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships, and No. 16 Stanford on court two. In doubles, two pairs of redshirt seniors have manned courts two and three in each match this season. Teodor Giusca and Henning have two wins on court two, while Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston are 5-0 on court three and are the only pair with double-digit wins on the team.
Three of the four Bulldogs to have at least three wins in the dual match season are also seniors, with Bryde, Croyder and Henning all reaching the mark. Henning and Bryde are tied for most on the team with four each.
