Henning Clinches Win for Georgia Over No. 16 Stanford

February 04, 2023 | Men's Tennis

LAKE NONA, Fla. –  The 13th-ranked University of Georgia Bulldogs men's tennis team defeated No. 16 Stanford in a thrilling 4-3 result behind Philip Henning's second-consecutive match-clinching singles win at the United State Tennis Association National Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia (2-2) earned the win over Stanford (4-2) after claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three and three in singles by No. 10 Henning, No. 106 Trent Bryde and No. 21 Blake Croyder on courts two, four and five, respectively.

"Just a tremendous college match," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We played outstanding doubles, probably our best doubles point of the year. Our guys are really locking in and playing with enthusiasm. We know Stanford is a great team, they were not going to go away quietly, and they mounted a great comeback. Ultimately, Blake Croyder gave us a lot of momentum, this was probably his best singles match of the year. Trent Bryde really showed some toughness today and just got us to the brink. Philip Henning showed tremendous fight and composure today during his match, and it ultimately helped him earn a big win against a great player. I also have to praise our guys for their togetherness and their ability to support each other. I thought they really gave Philip a boost in that third set. They stood behind him and encouraged him. Really proud of our guys today."

The match began in doubles competition, where Georgia clinched the point behind strong performances from all three courts.

55th-ranked Croyder and Britton Johnston won the first match in doubles, 6-1, becoming the first Bulldog tandem to reach 10 wins together this season. The redshirt seniors improve to 10-4 on the year, with an unblemished 4-0 mark on court three.

No. 19 Bryde and Ethan Quinn quickly clinched the point thereafter, also winning by a 6-1 score, and earned their second clinching win together this season. Teodor Giusca and Henning were also leading on court two, 5-2, when doubles competition finished.

No. 21 Croyder continued to impress in singles play, winning his match on court five in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-2 result. The Marietta native picked up his 12th singles victory of the year and improved to 3-1 from when playing in the fifth position.

No. 106 Bryde defeated Aryan Chaudhary in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to extend Georgia's match lead and put the contest at match point in its favor. The redshirt senior improved to 10-5 with the win, becoming the fourth Bulldog to reach double-digit singles wins this season.

However, Stanford continued to push and tied the match with a trio of singles wins. No 70 Giusca was unable to defeat Samir Banerjee on court three, dropping the contest 6-3, 6-4. Miguel Perz Peña lost to Neel Rajesh, dropping just his second match of the season on court six, while No. 1 Quinn was unable to defeat Arthur Fery on court one and fell by a 7-6(8), 6-2 result.

This put the deciding point on court two, where No. 10 Henning was just starting a third set. The redshirt senior won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(2), after falling behind 5-2, but dropped the second 6-3. Henning would go on to take a 4-2 lead after breaking No. 7 Max Basing's serve and would ultimately win the third set, 6-3, and match victory for Georgia for the second consecutive match.

Georgia continues play tomorrow, as it takes on No. 7 Southern California at 10 a.m. ET at the USTA National Campus. The Trojans defeated No. 15 Florida on Saturday afternoon, 5-2. USC made the trip to Athens for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in September, competing against the Bulldogs on the final day of the event, with Georgia finishing with four wins against USC in singles.
