QUICK HITS
Kickoff Weekend
The top-seeded Bulldogs won its Kickoff Weekend region, defeating No. 4 LSU and No. 2 Louisville to clinch a spot at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships. Georgia will head to Chicago to compete for the indoor national title on Feb. 17.
The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has become a frequent spot as a regional site for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. This will be the eighth time Georgia has been selected as a host site in the last 10 years and the 12th since 2009. This year, teams who ranked in the top-16 of the final ranking of the 2022 season were selected as a regional host for the event.
Diaz's Details
"Our team is very encouraged after our performances from this past weekend," said head coach Manny Diaz. "We're very much looking forward to these two challenging matches. They are great opportunities for us to continue to improve as a team, against two teams that are among the very best in the country. Our guys are focused on this opportunity."
Scouting the Cardinal
Stanford holds a 4-1 record after qualifying for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, defeating Georgia Tech and Texas A&M to win its region as a host.
The Cardinal is led by Nishesh Basavareddy, who was ranked No. 2 in the fall's newcomer poll just behind Georgia's Ethan Quinn. The freshman holds a 17-2 record thus far, with a loss in his lone dual match against Georgia Tech's Keshav Chopra.
Max Basing is the only other member of the team that appears in the ITA rankings, ranked at No. 7. The sophomore is 10-2 and holds a perfect 5-0 record on court two this season. Stanford and Georgia are the only two schools in the country with a pair of players ranked within the top 10 of the singles rankings.
Scouting the Trojans
Southern California is 4-0 through the early stages of the weekend, also clinching a spot in the ITA Team Indoor Championships at its home facility after defeating Vanderbilt and UCLA during Kickoff Weekend.
The Trojans have a trio of athletes appearing in the singles rankings, led by No. 38 Peter Makk with a 12-7 record. He is 3-0 in dual matches, winning one match on court one and the other two on court two. No. 65 Bradley Frye and No. 79 Stefan Dostanic round out the ranked USC singles players. Frye and Dostanic also make up the only ranked tandem for the team in doubles at No. 12.
The Trojans made the trip to Athens for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in September, competing against the Bulldogs on the final day of the event, with Georgia finishing with four wins against USC in singles.
Last Year, Best Year
Both of Georgia's two wins this season have been clinched by seniors, with Trent Bryde winning to defeat LSU and Philip Henning clinching the win over Louisville on court two to earn a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Three of the four Bulldogs to have at least two wins in the dual match season are also seniors, with Bryde, Blake Croyder and Henning all reaching the mark. Henning is tied for most on the team with three, all of which came from court two.
Dawgs in the Rankings
In the final player rankings of the fall season, four of the five ranked Bulldogs reached a new career high in singles – No. 1 Ethan Quinn, No. 10 Henning, No. 21 Croyder and No. 70 Teodor Giusca. It also marks the first poll Britton Johnston has appeared in throughout his career, reaching No. 55 in doubles with teammate Croyder.
Redshirt freshman Quinn earned the top spot in the singles poll after a strong start to his collegiate career, going 9-0 in the fall and winning the ITA All-American Championships. Quinn was joined by No. 10 Philip Henning in the top 10, making Georgia just one of two schools to have multiple players represented in the top 10.
The Bulldogs put five players in the singles rankings in total, rounded out by No. 21 Croyder, No. 70 Giusca and No. 106 Bryde. The Red and Black had a pair of tandems in the doubles rankings as well, led by 19th-ranked Bryde and Quinn and followed by No. 55 Croyder and Britton Johnston. The player rankings will update next on Feb. 8.
Georgia was also picked to finish at the top of the Southeastern Conference by the league's coaches. The Bulldogs received 155 points, edging just past Tennessee, who finished second. Rounding out the top five are Kentucky, South Carolina and Florida, respectively.
Georgia holds the most regular-season championships of any school in the SEC with 31 titles, 19 more than Florida, who holds the second most, with 12. Should the Red and Black win the conference crown this year, it would be the first time doing so since 2017. It would also be the program's 42nd overall conference title with 11 tournament crowns.
