October 15, 2023 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia volleyball team defeated the LSU Tigers in the first match back in Stegeman Coliseum Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,667 (25-22, 26-28, 25-21, 25-22).

Georgia climbs to 11-7 on the season and 2-4 in Southeastern Conference play.

Sophie Fischer and Kacie Evans each put up 17 kills in Sunday's match, with Fischer hitting .425. Each exceled on the defensive side of the ball with Fischer tying a season-high nine blocks and Evans tallying a double-double with 14 digs.

Setter Clara Brower also picked up a double-double with 47 assists and 16 digs to lead the team in both categories.

Georgia laid down seven service aces with Bailey Cox and Fischer leading the team with two apiece.

The close match featured 25 ties and 13 lead changes. No team won a set by more than four points in the back-and-forth battle.

Ahead one in the first, a 4-0 Georgia run opened a little bit of a lead, 12-7. The Dogs continued to build on the lead, leading by as much as six, 22-16. LSU (7-10, 2-5) rattled off five straight to slice the lead to 22-21 late. The Bulldogs held on to win the set 25-22 on back-to-back Fischer kills.

The second set was the closest of the match as the score was tied 11 times and the lead changed four times. The Tigers took an early lead, but Georgia remained on the heels of the opponent. Down 12-11, three-straight from the Dogs put Georgia ahead 14-12, but LSU responded with a 5-1 run to retake the lead 17-15. A 5-1 Georgia run gave the Bulldogs a 23-20 advantage. LSU fended off a Georgia set point, 24-22, to tie the set at 24-all. LSU completed the late comeback winning the set 28-26, tying the match. Evans put up eight kills in the second.

Four-straight points early in the third put LSU out in front. Down 9-7, Georgia won eight of the next 10 points to take a 15-11 lead. The Bulldogs held the lead, taking the frame 25-21, and reclaiming a 2-1 lead in the match.

Like the third set, the Tigers found an early lead in the fourth set. Georgia slowly chipped away at the LSU lead, eventually find an 18-17 lead on three-straight points. Following an LSU timeout, the Tigers tied it at 18, but a 3-0 Georgia run put the Bulldogs over the 20-point mark, 21-18. LSU cut it to one twice down the stretch, but a Fischer ace sealed the deal for the Bulldogs, 25-22, and the victory in four sets. Fischer tallied six kills and three blocks in the fourth.

The Bulldogs are back at Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday, Oct. 18 to host Ole Miss. First serve on SEC Network is set for 8 p.m., ET.

Head Coach Tom Black
On what he missed the most about playing in Stegeman...
"Everything. I think it's one of the best venues in the country, and the game presentation is awesome. We take a lot of pride in being in here, so it was great."

On the transition from Ramsey to Stegeman...
"I think it was easy. We got a couple days in during the week, and all our veterans are used to it in here, so it was pretty seamless."

On things to capitalize on heading into the next match...
"A lot of things. I just thought we were steadier - way steadier. That was great to see. I thought our offense was rolling, so we want to keep that going. Our passes have made huge improvements over the past couple weeks, too, so as our serving game keeps ticking up, we can maximize it on both ends."

On the atmosphere in Steg versus Ramsey…
"It's amazing to be back in Steg. I think Ramsey was a really compact environment, and it was good that we had a lot of fans show up there, but obviously here is a completely different atmosphere, and so it was really amazing for my teammates and I to come and play. It was really loud, and we appreciate everyone's support tonight."

On how she aims to make herself standout as a freshman…
"I think I'm just focusing on one ball, one play at a time. I have such great teammates surrounding me like Sophie [Fischer[, Kacie [Evans], and everyone, so I think I'm trying to take some pressure off of them too, and definitely make my presence known one ball at a time, getting reps in with my setters, and doing everything I can to help the team out."
