Georgia’s Road Stretch Ends with Four-Set Loss to Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Georgia volleyball team fell to South Carolina Wednesday evening in four sets at the Carolina Volleyball Center (22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 16-25). 
 
Georgia falls to 10-7 on the season and 1-4 in Southeastern Conference play. 
 
Kacie Evans and Sophie Fischer co-led the Bulldogs' offense with 15 kills each in the match. Fischer put up a team-best five blocks on the net coupled with her offensive performance. Bailey Cox tied a career-best four aces in the contest. 
 
Setter Clara Brower put up seven digs to lead the Bulldogs in the category followed by six each from Estelle Haugen and Mallory Downing
 
The Bulldogs came out strong, going up 5-2 to begin the match. South Carolina (7-8, 1-5) cut it to one a couple times, but Georgia held on to the lead and carried a 4-1 run into the media timeout, 15-10. A 6-1 Gamecock run after the media timeout erased Georgia's lead, tying the set, and prompting a Bulldog timeout. A 3-0 run gave South Carolina its first lead, 19-18. A kill by Evans and an SC bad set put Georgia back in front 20-19. The Gamecocks responded with three-straight again to retake a 22-20 lead and exhaust Georgia's timeouts. Georgia cut it to 23-22, but South Carolina held on to complete the comeback in the opening set, 25-22. Evans tallied six kills in the opener. 
 
A 6-0 Georgia run put the Dogs out in front 8-2 early in the second set. Still ahead six, 14-8, South Carolina won six of the next eight points to cut the lead to two, 16-14. Four-straight points restored Georgia's six-point advantage, 22-16. The Gamecocks won four of the next five to force Georgia's final timeout, 23-20. A Gamecock service error and an Ana Julia Bleeker ace finished the set for Georgia, 25-20, evening the match at a set apiece.
 
With Georgia ahead 7-5, a 9-2 Gamecock run put South Carolina in front 14-9. South Carolina kept its foot on the gas, rolling to a 25-18 set three win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match. 
 
Knotted at 4-all in the fourth, South Carolina went ahead 11-5 on a 7-1 run, exhausting both Georgia timeouts early. Another run, this one 7-2, put South Carolina in front by 10, 19-9. The Gamecocks finished the match with a 25-16 set four win. 
 
Next up, Georgia returns to Athens to host LSU on Sunday, Oct. 15. First serve at Stegeman Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. It will be the team's annual pink match. The first 400 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt.
