Georgia Returns to Action with Sweep of South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Led by a pair of three-win performances from senior standouts, the University of Georgia swimming and diving teams returned to action with a sweep of South Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Natatorium.
 
In the women's competition, the ninth-ranked Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2 SEC) defeated the No. 24 Gamecocks, 181-119, while the No. 10 Georgia men (7-1, 4-0 SEC) bested South Carolina, 189.5-109.5 for their sixth-consecutive dual meet victory.

After posting three wins against Kentucky, senior Zach Hils again notched a trio of victories in Saturday's meet. Hils finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.36, followed by wins in the 100 freestyle (44.48) and 200 IM (1:48.53). Fellow seniors Dillon Downing (50 freestyle) and Ian Grum (200 backstroke) also earned wins, with Downing contributing to victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
 
In the 1,000 freestyle, junior Tommy-Lee Camblong prevailed with a time of 9:12.68, while fellow junior Jake Magahey took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:26.18. Junior Wesley Ng dominated the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 48.08, besting the field by nearly a second. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Connor Haigh also notched a decisive win with a time of 2:01.76, leading a top-three sweep by the Bulldogs. Earlier in the 100 breaststroke, freshman Kristian Pitshugin tied for the victory with a time of 56.50.
 
At the diving well, sophomore Nolan Lewis posted one of his top scores of the season, posting a second-place 342.60 on the 3-meter, followed by fellow sophomore Rhett Hopkins in third at 324.68. In his first dual meet for Georgia, sophomore transfer Allen Mann placed third in the 1-meter with a mark of 292.28.
 
Women – No. 9 Georgia 181, No. 24 South Carolina 119
 
With 13 wins, the Georgia women returned to the win column for the first time since beating Florida State in October. Senior Zoie Hartman highlighted the day with three individual wins and a first-place relay, sweeping the breaststroke events and winning the 200 IM. Hartman also swam the second leg of the victorious 200 medley relay, joining graduates Marie Schobel and Callie Dickinson and sophomore Eboni McCarty.
 
Each of the relay participants also won their individual events, including Schobel, who took both backstroke events. McCarty swept the sprint events, while Dickinson took first in the 200 butterfly at 2:00.20. Sophomore Duné Coetzee turned in her best performance of the season with wins in the 200 (1:48.57) and 500 freestyle (4:48.44). Additionally, sophomore Abby McCulloh prevailed in the 1,000 freestyle for the fourth time this season with a time of 9:47.49. In the closing 400 freestyle relay, McCarty joined teammates Sloane Reinstein, Briana Roberson, and Shea Furse to win with a time of 3:22.76.
 
In diving, junior Meghan Wenzel set a new collegiate personal best in the 3-meter with a third-place score of 318.90, while also placing third on 1-meter with a mark of 275.40.

Georgia remains on the road to face Tennessee next Saturday, Jan. 21 in Knoxville at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs return home for a Senior Day meet against Emory on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m.
