Another Pair Advance To Nationals, Two More Qualify For Quarters At East Prelims
May 26, 2022 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --- The Bulldog track and field teams upped their number to six who are qualified for the final round of the NCAA Championships on the second day of the NCAA East Prelims Thursday.
In addition, two women qualified for the 100-meter hurdle quarterfinals on Saturday.
Senior Titiana Marsh was the first Georgia competitor to punch her ticket on Thursday during a day slowed again by weather delays. Marsh had the second-best long jump effort of the meet to qualify for her second consecutive Nationals. Junior Ana da Silva was next to finish in the top 12 after her third attempt in the shot put measured second best in the field.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs qualified a pair of competitors for the final rounds of the NCAA Championships as senior Alencar Pereira advanced in the hammer throw and senior Ahmed Magour was in the top 12 of the javelin.
The Lady Bulldogs kept Georgia's streak alive of qualifying for the quarterfinals in the opening event on the track. Senior Imani Carothers shot to a 13.47 in the 100m hurdles to advance to her second straight quarterfinals at the meet and freshman Eddiyah Frye advanced to her first with a 13.59.
Wednesday's competition belonged to the men and the Bulldogs put all six competitors through in seven events to the men's quarterfinal round on Friday: senior Sam Bowers (1500m), junior Matthew Boling (100m/200m), senior Delano Dunkley (100m), senior Elija Godwin (400m), senior Clay Pender (800m), junior Caleb Cavanaugh (400m hurdles).
There are 48 competitors from the East Region in every individual event and 24 in the relays. The NCAA West Prelims is running simultaneously in Fayetteville, Ark., with the same format. The top 12 in each event from both regions advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore, on June 8-11.
Two Bulldogs ranked in the nation's top four in the multi-events earned the right to skip the Prelims by automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships (senior Johannes Erm, junior Kyle Garland – decathlon).
When Do The Bulldogs Start On Friday? The second and final day of the competition for the men begins on Friday. Senior Darius Carbin is the only Bulldog in a field event on Friday with the high jump at 2:30 p.m. Carbin's last outing was the Southeastern Conference Championships where he won his first outdoor title. Bowers begins the day in the 1500m quarterfinals at 5:15 p.m. with a chance for Nationals on the line. The rest of the men's qualifiers for the quarterfinals listed above will run later in the day.

The Lowdown: A Lady Bulldog duo can now make their reservations for Oregon after stellar performances in the field. Da Silva, who is a native of Brazil, went longer than 56 feet and a half for the fifth straight meet to qualify for her first NCAA Championships during her inaugural year at Georgia. Da Silva reached 17.99 meters/59 feet, ¼ inches in a series that first featured tosses of 17.86/58-7.25 and 17.83/58-6. The school record holder is currently ranked second nationally.
Marsh, a native of Chester, Va., wasted little time in the long jump, traveling 6.37/20-10.75 on her opening attempt to lock down her spot in Eugene by nearly a foot. Marsh's second-best attempt of 6.29/20-7.75 would have still been in the top eight on Thursday.
Georgia also had two qualifiers for quarterfinals during the second day of action. Carothers, a native of Chicago, Ill., automatically qualified for next round after being the second competitor across the line in the sixth and final heat with a 13.47 to take 18th overall. One spot behind Carothers in her heat was Frye, a native of Miami Gardens, Fla., who was 27th overall with a 13.59 at her first Prelims. The pair will race on Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
Two Lady Bulldogs sent personal records to the field in the hammer throw but narrowly missed Nationals. Da Silva started her day with a career best in the hammer on her third and final toss to take 14th. She went 63.91/209-8 to improve her No. 7 spot in the school record books with the top throw in her flight.
Elsie Igberaese, a native of Dacula, Ga., answered an opening round personal best of 62.17/203-11 with a second hammer throw that measured 63.25/207-6. This earned her second place in her flight behind da Silva and gave her possession of the eighth-best performance in school history. Igberaese completed the competition in 15th.
