Pair of School Records Fall As Torrin Lawrence Memorial Wraps Up
April 30, 2022 | Track & Field
Athens, Ga. ---The Bulldogs broke a pair of school records and secured a dozen top collegiate finishes (10 outright wins) to wrap up the fifth annual Torrin Lawrence Memorial at the Spec Towns Track Saturday.
Senior Darius Carbin, a native of San Jose, Calif., had not set a fresh personal record in the high jump since the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships until he exploded for a school record on his home track to win on the meet's second day.
Several events before that, another school record came in the middle distances with senior Sam Bowers knocking down an 18-year-old time as he won the 1500 meters by eight seconds. The Milton, Ga., native established a fresh UGA No. 1 time in the mile during the indoor season.

Coach Caryl's Comments: "Great performance overall by Darius today and I thought the energy from the crowd was magnificent during that high jump," said head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert. "Matthew (Boling) ran 10.05 fairly easily as we have been working on some relaxation techniques so I was pleased to see that. Sam Bowers has been coming along all year long and looking better and better and right now he's at the pinnacle so I am happy for him. Ana da Silva also had a great series in the shot and we are looking for her to throw at that level on a consistent basis."
There will also 17 seniors honored during the meet as the Bulldogs' closed out the regular season.
"These seniors have led the way all year, they have supported me, they give me advice, tell me things that I need to know to help our teams and I am going to hate to see this group go. Overall this is a great senior class and I am happy I was able to be their head coach while they were here."
The Lowdown: Carbin, who was battling Auburn's Dontavious Hill (2.23 meters/7 feet, 3 ¾ inches) through the first five rounds, was clean with no misses through four heights before tying the school record with a mark of 2.30m/7-6.50 on his second try. This mark matched Dothel Edwards' school record from 1985, tied Carbin for the national lead and also situated him into a tie for the 2022 world lead.
Bowers worked with teammate Wesley John (3rd – 3:52.04) early in the race and then managed to take over and control the lead for a majority of his four laps around the track. This passed the former school record of 3:42.82 set by Simon Ngata (2004).
While it was not a career best for the Lady Bulldog top finisher in the 1500m, it was a brilliant move by sophomore Charlotte Augenstein on the final straightaway to clinch the victory. Sitting in the third position with 50 meters left, Augenstein locked on the inside rail and shot past the eventual second and third-place finishers to clinch the victory by. 36 with a 4:36.58.
Junior Ana da Silva posted her top career series in the shot put to win her third meet of the year and place in the top two for the fifth time in 2022 outdoors. Starting with a mark of 17.18m/56-4.50, da Silva worked up to a third attempt that measured 17.34m/56-10.75. Other than a foul on her fifth try, the Lady Bulldog school record holder went no shorter than 16.85m/55-3.50 in her six-throw series.
Also in the shot, junior Mia Anderson reached her top distance of 14.21m/46-7.50 on her fifth attempt to take third place.
On the men's side, junior Gavin Beverage hit the longest shot put throw of his competition on his sixth and final toss to earn bronze medal honors. He reached 60 feet for the second time this season after going 18.43m/60-5.75.
Junior Matthew Boling was the wind legal national leader in the 100m coming into the meet and left with another solid performance on the straightaway. Boling ran a smooth 10.05 to grab top honors.
A seasonal best came for senior Titiana Marsh last week at Georgia Tech in the triple jump but her second-best performance of the year was strong enough for a top collegiate finish in Athens. Marsh built her series up to a 13.29m/43-7.25 on her fifth try to take second overall.
Graduate transfer Julia Harisay won her second straight meet in the javelin by nearly 12 feet. Harisay had a measurement of 46.92m/153-11 late in her series and had six fair throws to highlight her performance.
Senior Ahmed Magour kept to a shortened approach as he prepares for the postseason and won with an opening javelin attempt of 63.15m/207-2. While senior Alejandro Collins also started with his best throw (59.16m/194-1) for second, Great Britain's Roald Bradstock, who turned 60 on Sunday, set the British national record in the age 60 and up after sending his sixth and final javelin attempt 58.18m/190-10.
There was only a single competitor who broke 46 seconds in the 400m and that was Bulldog senior Elija Godwin, who clocked a controlled 45.70. Relay teammate and 400m specialist Caleb Cavanaugh earned runner-up honors after a lap with a 46.55.
Early in the morning, the trio of Lady Bulldogs made up the field in the 5000m and junior Sara Bailey pulled out the victory with a 17:45.13. Senior Grace Clements completed her laps in 18:12.99 for second-place honors as junior Ellie Hall was the third Georgia runner across the line in 18:23.11.
The meet concluded with senior decathlete Johannes Erm combining with middle distance runner Clay Pender and distance freshmen Karthik Kochuparambil and Seth White to win the 4x400m relay. The Bulldog foursome combined for a 3:17.93 to edge the only other team in the field by three seconds.
Also of note, sophomore Michaella Prevallet hit a Georgia personal best of 3.67m/12-0.50 in the pole vault with two first-attempt clearances to finish fourth.
Erm, who continues to train for his first decathlon of the season, ran an impressive 14.49 to take fourth in the 110m hurdles.
