Three School Records Fall To Highlight Track’s Day At Tom Jones Memorial

April 16, 2022 | Track & Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Georgia's track and field teams shattered three school records and registered seven marks that would be in the country's top 10 coming into the weekend to electrify the crowd during the final day of the Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday.

Complementing a solid opening day on Friday, the Bulldogs had junior Matthew Boling topple the UGA 100-meter dash record (his sixth school record event counting the relay below), fellow junior Ana da Silva uproot a 22-year-old record in the shot put and the men's 4x400m relay leave the former No. 1 Georgia mark behind that had stood since 1991.

Georgia also left the University of Florida's Percy Beard Track with top-10 national marks in the men's 400m, men's hammer throw, women's high jump (x2).

The Lowdown: Boling, a native of Houston, Texas, scared the school record in the 100m last week with a 10.03 only to blaze to a 9.98 on Saturday and leave Kendal Williams' former time of 9.99 (2018) behind him.  With a legal 1.6 meter/second wind, Boling bettered his NCAA lead and moved to No. 2 on the 2022 world list.

Silva, a Brazilian native, walked away with the shot put title by more than a foot and a half.  She launched her third attempt 17.56 meters/57 feet, 7 ½ inches to drop Rhonda Hackett's mark of 55-2.25 from 2000 to No. 2 in the school records books.  Da Silva now stands No. 4 in the NCAA this season after starting her series with an impressive 56-foot throw.

Boling returned on the second leg of the 4x400m relay to work with junior Caleb Cavanaugh, freshman Bryce McCray and senior Elija Godwin (first, third, fourth legs, respectively) as the foursome ran what would be the country's third-fastest time this year.  The Bulldogs clocked a 3:02.10, which smoked the previous record of 3:03.66 that came from the 1991 Drake Relays.

The Lady Bulldog high jumpers, who hit 1.84m/6-0.50 during their last trip to Florida, each reached 1.86m/6-1.25 this time around to finish second and third.  Freshman Elena Kulichenko posted a first attempt clearance at the height while graduate transfer Jamari Drake passed over the bar at the same height on her second try.  This ties the duo at No. 8 on UGA's all-time top-10 list and moves them to No. 4 on the current national list.

Godwin, who hails from Covington, Ga., sped to a season-best time of 45.47 to take third in the 400m before his relay run.  This is the sixth-fastest time in the country this year.

Another Bulldog Brazilian thrower, junior Alencar Pereira, built a solid series in the hammer before putting an exclamation on his six throws with a winning mark of 70.09m/229-11.  This effort pushed him into the school record books at No. 8 and also situated him eighth on the country's descending order list.

Georgia's middle distance corps also saw a massive personal best from senior Clay Pender.  Pender knocked out his two laps of the 800m in 1:48.64 to take over the No. 10 spot on the Bulldog top-10 list.

Yet another pair of career bests came from two other Bulldog throwers.  Junior Elsie Igberaese went 60.58m/198-9 on her only fair throw of the contest for seventh.  On the men's side, junior Gavin Beverage answered an opening foul with a mark of 18.73m/61-5.50 to scoot into the No. 10 spot in the school record books and earn runner-up honors at the meet.

Also of note, a trio of Georgia distance runners recorded top-three finishes in the 3000m.  Senior Grace Clements won the women's half after clocking a 10:05.87 with freshman Gracie O'Neal taking third (10:32.66).  Freshman Cooper Bocko was third in the men's 3000m thanks to his time of 8:28.87.
