Diving Heads to NCAA Zone B Championships in Atlanta

March 04, 2022 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – In the opening event of postseason action, the University of Georgia diving team heads to Atlanta for the 2022 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships running Sunday, March 6 through Wednesday, March 9 at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.

This week's meet is the first of three NCAA events being held at McAuley, followed by the Women's Swimming & Diving Championships (March 16-19) and Men's Swimming & Diving Championships (March 23-26). Earlier this week, 14 members of the Georgia women's swimming team were selected for NCAAs. The men's qualifiers will be announced Wednesday, March 9 at noon.

The competition begins Sunday at 2 p.m. with the women's 1-meter, followed by Monday with the women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter. Tuesday's action features the women's platform and men's 3-meter, with the men's platform closing the meet on Wednesday. The final three days of competition begin at 11 a.m. Live results will be available on DiveMeets.com throughout the week.

Georgia will be represented by six divers this week, with a Bulldog competing in five of the six events. For the women's team, sophomore Meghan Wenzel will compete on the 1-meter and platform, both events that she advanced to finals in at the SEC Championships. Senior Ellie Crump will compete on both springboards, while fellow senior Tally Brown will perform on 1-meter. On the men's side, freshman Nolan Lewis is set for the 3-meter and platform, joined by fellow rookies Timothy Fagan (platform) and Rhett Hopkins (3-meter).

During Zones, all entered divers will compete in a preliminary round, with the top 18 advancing to the finals. In that round, the top five female and top four male divers will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. In other events, a certain number of additional qualifying spots will be allowed, including 10 (1m), 10 (3m), and nine (platform) for women, and eight (1m), 11 (3m), and seven (platform) for men.

Additionally, any diver who qualifies for NCAAs in one event will be allowed to compete in another event if they finish top-12 in that event at Zones. Following the conclusion of Zones and the reimbursement process for qualifying, the full list of selected divers will be announced on Sunday, March 13.
