Wenzel Qualifies for NCAA Championships on 1-meter

March 06, 2022 | Swimming & Diving

ATLANTA – With a seventh-place score of 577.00 on the 1-meter springboard, sophomore Meghan Wenzel punched her ticket for the NCAA Championships Sunday afternoon on the opening day of the Zone B Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

Wenzel is the first Georgia female diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships since McKensi Austin and Freida Lim both reached the meet in 2019. With the qualification, Georgia will now carry 15 competitors into next week's NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, also taking place at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

The Hatfield, Pennsylvania native put herself in strong position for NCAAs with a seventh-place mark of 284.05 in prelims, closing her program with a 52.00 on her sixth dive. In the finals, she again earned top marks on her most difficult dives, receiving a score of 54.60 on two of her final three attempts.

Wenzel was joined in the finals by senior Ellie Crump, who turned in her career-best Zones appearance with a 15th-place score of 526.05. In prelims, Crump placed 17th at 265.65 before moving up in the second round with a high mark of 49.20 on her second dive. Fellow senior Tally Brown tied for 31st in prelims with a score of 231.80.

Zones continue Monday with Crump competing in the women's 3-meter. The top 10 finishers will automatically qualify for nationals. Wenzel will return to competition on Tuesday in the platform event, needing just a top-12 finish to add to her NCAA program.
