Evans, Fischer Earn AVCA Southeast All-Region Awards
December 06, 2022 | Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Georgia volleyball student-athletes Kacie Evans and Sophie Fischer have added American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Southeast All-Region Team to their list of honors in 2022, it was announced Tuesday.
"Kacie and Sophie have had incredible seasons and this honor is well deserved," head coach Tom Black said. "We are very proud of both of them, and we couldn't be more excited for how they will continue to grow and develop. Huge congratulations to Sophie and Kacie!"
This is the first time since 1995 that two Georgia Bulldogs (Hadli Anstine, Nikki Nicholson) have earned AVCA All-Region honors in the same season. Evans was named the 2019 AVCA Southeast Freshman of the Year but did not earn All-Region Team status that season.
The pair add All-Region honors to their list of accolades this season including All-SEC and a combined five SEC Player of the Week awards. They now become eligible for All-America voting.
Georgia concluded the season Dec. 2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against top-seeded Texas in Austin. The Bulldogs knocked off No. 8 Towson the night prior in four sets for their first NCAA Tournament win since 1995. Evans and Fischer helped guide the Bulldogs to a 23-8 record on the season and a 13-5 SEC record, finishing third in the league. The pair combined for nearly half (48.9%) of points this season.
Evans, a native of Wadsworth, Ohio, finished the season with a 4.18 kills per set clip (489 total kills), hitting .226 on the outside. She led the Bulldogs with 46 service aces and was second on the team defensively with 2.00 digs per set. She also put up 81 blocks in 2022. Altogether, she registered 578 points. Evans became the 19th member of Georgia's 1,000-Kill Club earlier in the season. She currently has 1,412 in her career.
Fischer, who hails from Fort Mill, South Carolina, was a force at the net in her first season in the Red and Black, putting up 183 total blocks. That number finished third in single season blocks in Georgia history and the most in the rally scoring era which began in 2001. Her 170 block assists finished second, eight shy of tying Georgia's single-season record.
