Henning Advances to Round of 16 at ITA National Fall Championships

November 03, 2022 | Men's Tennis

SAN DIEGO – Georgia men's tennis senior Philip Henning won his opening round match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships on Wednesday, defeating VCU's Matisse Bobichon by a straight-set result of 6-2, 6-4 at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Henning, who earned a No. 5-8 seed in the draw, advanced to the round of 16 with his victory and next faces Andrew Fenty (Michigan) on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. Though his opponent is unseeded, Fenty is the No. 42 ranked player in the ITA preseason singles rankings.

Blake Croyder also competed in the singles field yesterday, playing in a hard-fought match but ultimately falling to Natan Rodrigues (Louisville) in a 6-2, 7-5 decision. The senior's fall record now stands at 9-3 after earning a spot in the event by winning the ITA Southeast Regional singles title in Tallahassee, Fla.

No. 5-8 Trent Bryde and Henning played their match in the doubles draw later in the afternoon. The Bulldog tandem faced off against conference foes Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic of Mississippi State but could not pick up their sixth win of the fall together, losing by a 6-2, 7-5 score. The seniors are now 5-2 on the season.

Georgia was tied with three other schools, Louisville, Michigan and Stanford, for the most players in the opening round of the singles main draw with Croyder and Henning. Ethan Quinn qualified for the event by winning the ITA All-American singles title but instead elected to participate in the Charlottesville Pro Challenger. Had the redshirt freshman accepted his automatic qualifier, Georgia would have had the most players in the field.
