The Opening Tip

If you like watching Georgia Basketball, you have plenty to be thankful for this week. The Bulldogs host East Tennessee State on Sunday to open a three-game homestand over the next six days. Georgia will also entertain Hampton on Wednesday and Florida A&M on Friday, giving the Bulldogs a trio of games at Stegeman Coliseum in a span of roughly 128 hours.

Georgia enters the week with a 4-2 record after splitting their games at the Greenlight Sunshine Slam presented by Discount Tire last Monday and Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Bulldogs raced to a 38-15 halftime lead over Saint Joseph's en route to victory. The Hawks' 15 points were the fewest Georgia surrendered in a first half since giving up 12 at Kansas State on Dec. 31, 2014.

Georgia also led UAB at the intermission of the Beach Bracket's championship game before falling to the Blazers.

Series History With ETSU

By virtue of its win last season in Athens, East Tennessee State leads the all-time series between the Bulldogs and the Bucs, 3-2.

Noah Baumann poured 25 points to lead a trio of Bulldogs in double figures; however, ETSU used a late rally to defeat Georgia, 86-84, on Dec. 20 last season.

Baumann reached that mark while connecting on 8-of-10 shots from the floor including 7-of-9 from 3-point range. Aaron Cook and Kario Oquendo chipped in 17 and 15 points, respectively.

After trailing by as many as 14 points early in the second half, the Bulldogs rallied to cut that margin to a single bucket at 58-56 with 14:54 remaining.

Georgia eventually went up for the first time on a Cook jumper at the 8:03 mark. The teams traded the lead before a layup by Cook opened an 11-2 surge that put the Bulldogs up 82-74. The Bucs outscored Georgia 12-2 thereafter to earn the upset.

Scouting The Bucs

The Buccaneers arrive in Athens with a 3-3 record following a 74-70 loss to Appalachian State on Wednesday. East Tennessee State is led by Desmond Oliver, who spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia from 2004-09.

ETSU returns a pair of starters – Jordan King and Jaden Seymour – from last year's 15-17 team. King is averaging a team-leading 14.2 points per game. Seymour contributed 9.7 points per game in the first three games but has been out of action since.

Jalen Haynes and Deanthony Tipler also are scoring at a double-digit pace, with both players contributing 13.0 ppg. Former Bulldog Josh Taylor is the Bucs' leading rebounder, collecting 7.7 boards per game.

Last Time Out

Georgia started quickly and led virtually the entire first half before falling to UAB, 87-73, in the championship game of the Greenlight Sunshine Slam last Tuesday.

Justin Hill's 17-point performance led a trio of Bulldogs in double digits and helped him earn a spot on the event's all-tournament team. Kario Oquendo chipped in 12 points, and Braelen Bridges contributed season-high tallies of 10 points and seven rebounds for Georgia.

The Bulldogs opened up a 15-8 lead just over five minutes into the game and owned a seven-point advantage on three more occasions before wrapping up the opening half leading 42-41.

UAB started the second stanza with a 10-2 surge to grab its own seven-point edge at 51-44 with 16:57 remaining. The Blazers methodically expanded that margin to 68-55 and never allowed Georgia within single digits the rest of the evening.

Hey...We Know Those Dudes!

Three members of the ETSU Basketball program have ties to UGA.

Head coach Desmond Oliver was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs for five seasons from 2004-09 under Dennis Felton. That span included Georgia's improbable run to the 2008 SEC Tournament title and a subsequent NCAA bid.

Josh Taylor played for Georgia for the past two seasons before transferring to ETSU. The Atlanta native and Norcross High graduate saw action in 17 games for the Bulldogs. Taylor has started every contest this season and is chipping in 9.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Brock Jancek is the son of John Jancek, who has had two stints on the Georgia football staff. Brock played four seasons at Tennessee before moving to Johnson City as a graduate transfer. He has started three games and is contributing 7.3 points while shooting 72.7 percent from the field.

John was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs from 2005-09, including serving as co-defensive coordinator for the 2009 campaign. He was a quality control coordinator for Georgia's national championship team last season before moving on to join the staff at LSU.

A Very Productive Bench

Georgia's bench has scored 164 points in the first six games, accounting for 38.2 percent of 429 points put up by the Bulldogs to date.

Georgia's bench has outscored its opponents reserves 164-57, a massive +107 margin.

After topping 20 points in the first five games, Georgia's reserves scored a season-high 36 points versus UAB.

Hill Named All-Tourney

Justin Hill was named to the Beach Bracket's all-tournament team at the Greenlight Sunshine Slam presented by Discount Tire.

The junior from Houston averaged a team-high 14.5 points against Saint Joseph's and UAB by shooting 61.5 percent from the field and an even more impressive 71.4 percent from 3-point range.

Hill put up 12 points against Saint Joseph's, including a shot clock-beating 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining after the Hawks cut Georgia's 23-point halftime lead to 54-46.

Hill then led the Bulldogs offensively for the first time this season with 17 points versus UAB.

A Homecoming For Kario

Kario Oquendo was productive in his homecoming trip to the Sunshine State for the Sunshine Slam. Oquendo is from Titusville, Fla., just under an hour south of Daytona Beach.

Oquendo scored a game-high 17 points in Georgia's win over Saint Joseph's and put up 12 points against UAB.

Oquendo averaged 21.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in leading Astronaut High School to a 20-6 finish in 2019.

Oquendo was named Brevard County Class 5A Player of the Year by area coaches that season. He also was tabbed All-Cape Coast in both 2019 for Astronaut and in 2018 while playing at Titusville High.

Etter Still Taking Charges

Former Jaxon Etter has made quite the name for himself on defense.

The senior from Woodstock, Ga., who was awarded a scholarship on Nov. 2, has taken five charges in four games played this season.

That comes after drawing 30 offensive fouls in 31 games last season and eight in the last 11 games of his sophomore year.

All told, Etter has now been on the receiving end of 35 charges in his last 35 games...and 43 in his last 46 outings...though we think – with respect to the folks with whistles on game days – several more should have gone his way.

Roberts Pops For 20...Twice

Terry Roberts recorded back-to-back 20-point outings against Miami (Ohio) and Bucknell, scoring 22 points against the RedHawks before popping for 20 versus the Bison.

Roberts' contributions weren't limited to the scoring column. He led the Bulldogs with three assists, two steals and a block against the RedHawks and then contributed team-high efforts of nine boards, six assists and two steals in the win over Bucknell.

Lindsay Off To Solid Start Freshman KyeRon Lindsay, who was rated as the nation's No. 87 prospect in the Class of 2022 by 247Sports.com, made an immediate impact at Georgia.

The Denton, Texas, product tied for team-high rebounding honors with six boards in the opener versus Western Carolina. With Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe out of action due to an injury at Wake Forest, Lindsay made his first start in Winston-Salem and scored 10 points. He followed with his first collegiate double-double – 14 points and 10 rebounds – against Miami (Ohio).

In that trio of outings, Lindsay averaged 8.0 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting a stellar 66.7 percent from the floor.

Bulldogs Sign Top-25 class

Georgia opened the NCAA's early signing period on Wednesday, Nov. 9 with a bang, inking a top-25 recruiting class comprised of two of the nation's top-100 prospects.

Lamariyon "Mari" Jordan and Dylan James were ranked No. 72 and No. 94 nationally by ESPN.com, respectively. Together, they gave Georgia the No. 25-ranked recruiting class on ESPN.com when the signing period began.

"It's an exciting day for us to be able to sign two players that we targeted and invested a lot of time and energy in," Mike White said. "Both of these guys are excited to be Bulldogs. Mari grew up right down the road from Athens and has always admired this university. He is a high-energy player who possesses much versatility and has a very good positional size Dylan has tremendous length for a guy who shoots the ball the way that he does. He also has the ability to post. Like Mari, he has a chance to be a very good defender as well."

James, a 6-9, 190-pound power forward, helped lead Winter Haven High School to the semifinals of the 2022 Florida Class 6A state tournament. He was selected as the Lakeland Ledger's Player of the Year after averaging 15.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game last season for the Blue Devils, who finished 23-8 overall. James helped Winter Haven compile a 23-9 record as a freshman before playing at The Rock School during his sophomore year.

James' and his Winter Haven teammates began the 2022-23 season ranked No. 67 nationally by MaxPreps.

James also was ranked as the nation's No. 94 prospect by 247Sports.com, as well as No. 115 by On3.com and No. 133 by Rivals.com.

Jordan, a 6-6, 185-pound small forward, was tabbed first-team All-State for Class 6A by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a junior after averaging 19.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game for Dacula High School. Over three seasons, Jordan has compiled 1,257 points, 434 rebounds, 128 blocks, 109 assists and 104 steals for the Falcons. He was voted the Region 8-6A Player of the Year and named second-team All-Gwinnett County by the Gwinnett Daily Post as a junior.

Jordan is playing at Norcross High as a senior, where he was tabbed second-team preseason All-State by the Georgia High School Coaches Association (GHSA).

Nationally, Jordan is ranked No. 101 by 247Sports.com and No. 137 by Rivals.com.
