Georgia Blanks LSU Friday in Baton Rouge

November 25, 2022 | Volleyball

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team swept the LSU Tigers at the Maravich Assembly Center Friday afternoon in three sets (25-21, 27-25, 31-29).

Georgia climbs to 21-7 on the season and 12-5 in SEC play. With the win, the Bulldogs will finish third place in the SEC, the best finish for Georgia since 1995 when UGA finished second in the East division and third overall in the Conference.

Senior Kacie Evans led the offense with 16 kills in the match. Coupled with 13 digs, Evans tallied her seventh double-double of the season. Junior Sophie Fischer finished with nine kills for the offense.

Defensively, libero Bailey Cox registered 18 digs. Freshman Tori Harper led the team with five blocks followed by four each from Mackenzie Norris and Fischer.

Norris and Alexa Fortin each laid down two service aces in the match. Fortin narrowly missed a double-double of her own with 16 assists and eight digs.

Georgia found a quick lead in the opening set, but LSU (15-12, 9-8) worked to knot it at 11. Georgia won a long rally to keep the lead and used it to take a 4-0 run into the media timeout with a 15-11 lead. The Dogs found a five-point advantage at 17-12, but LSU began to slow the Georgia offense, whittling the lead to one, 19-18, and forcing a timeout from the Bulldog bench. Tied at 20, Georgia put together a 5-1 run to win the opening set 25-21. Evans tallied six kills in the first set.

All square at 6-all, a 4-1 run opened a three-point lead for the Dogs, prompting an LSU timeout in the second set. Georgia continued to lead, going ahead by as much as five, 18-13. LSU didn't go quietly, tying the set at 22, then fending off set point and tying it once again at 24 late in the frame. Holding on to set point at 26-25, Georgia claimed set two on a Tiger error, 27-25, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

With Georgia ahead 5-3, a 7-2 run from LSU propelled the Tigers out in front 10-7, prompting a Bulldog timeout. LSU kept its foot on the gas, going ahead by as much as eight, 20-21. A 5-1 Georgia run narrowed the deficit and prompted a Tiger timeout, 21-17. Georgia won three-of-four rallies after the break to continue narrowing the Tigers lead to two, 22-20. It became a whole new game when Georgia tied the set at 23. The Dogs fended off an LSU set point to turn the tables and draw match point. The back-and-forth battle ensued with LSU drawing set point twice, then Georgia drawing match point then LSU set point again at 29-28. A Harper/Norris block and a Norris kill drew match point for a third time. A solo block from Fortin secured the sweep for the Bulldogs, 31-29.

Georgia and LSU will close the series and the regular season Saturday afternoon at the Maravich Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m., ET, on SEC Network +.
