Bulldogs Conclude Series at LSU with 3-0 Sweep

November 26, 2022 | Volleyball

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team concluded the 2022 regular season with its second sweep of the LSU Tigers in as many days Saturday at the Maravich Assembly Center (25-16, 26-24, 25-23).

Georgia concludes the 2022 regular season with 22 wins (22-7 overall), the most by Georgia since 2013. The win also secured a program-record 13 SEC victories (13-5) for Georgia and a third-place finish in the league.

Next, UGA will look to make its 11th program appearance in the NCAA Tournament and second under Tom Black. The NCAA Tournament selection show will air nationally on ESPNU Sunday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m., ET.

The Bulldogs put three players in double-digit kills on Saturday, led by 15 from senior Kacie Evans. Junior Sophie Fischer and senior Amber Stivrins laid down 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Fischer hit an efficient .478 in the match.

Defensively, libero Bailey Cox registered 12 kills followed by nine each from Alexa Fortin and Evans. At the net, Georgia recorded 10 blocks with eight from Fischer and six from freshman Tori Harper.

After a slow start to the opening set, a 7-1 run propelled Georgia ahead 8-5. LSU (15-13, 9-9) cut the lead to 11-10, but Georgia rattled off four straight to take a 15-10 lead into the first media timeout. The Dogs widened their lead to six before a 4-0 Tiger run sliced the lead to two at 17-15, prompting a timeout from Georgia. The Bulldogs regrouped to finish the set on a 7-1 scoring run en route to a 25-16 set one victory. Georgia hit .349 to open the match.

The second set was an all-out battle to start with 11 ties and five lead changes before the media break. Back-to-back blocks gave Georgia the 15-14 lead at the media timeout. With Georgia ahead 21-17, a 4-1 Tiger run sliced the late lead to one, prompting a Georgia timeout, 22-21. After the Dogs drew set point, LSU battled back to keep the set alive by tying it at 24, the 14th tie of the set. Kills from Fischer and Evans finished the set for Georgia, 26-24.

A strong start in the third set found Georgia in front 8-4 to force an early Tiger timeout. Georgia's lead of six was erased with a five-point run from LSU, tying the set at 14-all. The back-and-forth battle continued to the end of the set. Georgia drew set point at 24-22 but LSU kept the match alive as Georgia took its final timeout. The sweep was secured for Georgia on a missed LSU serve, 25-23.
