PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Georgia women's golf team shot even-par 284 in the opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday. The Bulldogs' tally was the low loop of the 10 teams competing in the morning wave and placed Georgia tied for sixth when the afternoon teams wrapped up their rounds.
Super seniors Jenny Bae and Jo Hua Hung paced Georgia with matching 2-under 69s, while the Bulldogs also counted a pair of 73s from senior Candice Mahé and junior Isabella Holpfer.
"We played well today," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It was the start we wanted. We talked as a team that we wanted to treat this like a postseason tournament and be ready to go from the beginning. Today was a good start. We won our wave. We had four solid rounds and two really good rounds."
Bae notched her seventh score in the 60s in 10 fall rounds. She opened with a birdie and put together a trio of red numbers at Nos. 6-8 to move to 4-under on the day. Following a bogey at No. 9, Bae parred her first five holes on the back side before her fifth birdie of the day at No. 15. After sitting atop the individual leaderboard for much of the day, Bae bogeyed No. 16 and No. 18 to slip to fourth among 50 golfers teeing off in the morning.
Hung's loop was exceptionally steady. She also birdied No. 1 but gave that stroke back with her lone bogey of the day at No. 6. Hung played the back side at 2-under, posting red birdies at No. 10 and No. 15.
Bae and Hung finished the day in ninth place, three shots off the pace set by Stanford's Rose Zhang. Holpfer and Mahé are tied for 44th, and Caterina Don, who shot 78 on Friday, it tied for 90th.
Top-ranked Stanford is the team leader through 18 holes after carding an 8-under 276. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 19 San Jose State at 279, Denver at 281, No. 9 Virginia 282, Northwestern at 283, the Bulldogs, No. 8 Texas and No. 10 Southern California all at 284 and Oregon State and Iowa State both at 285.
After playing in the morning on Friday, Georgia will tee off in the afternoon on Saturday, hitting the course beginning at 12:55 p.m. PT. The time between rounds with morning and afternoon waves emulates the format at the NCAA Championships.
"It's good preparation for what it's like in Scottsdale," Brewer said. "We'll have dinner, get some rest and see what other people shoot before we take the course. We'll go out and try to win our wave again tomorrow. If we can do that, we should be in a good position going into Sunday and our final round of the fall."
Georgia will be paired with Arizona State and UC Davis on Saturday and tee off from No. 10. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
