Georgia Hosts Kennesaw State in Saturday Exhibition
August 13, 2021 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – Following a 2-0 defeat at Duke on Tuesday evening, the University of Georgia soccer team opens an eight-game homestand at the Turner Soccer Complex with its second and final exhibition against Kennesaw State Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
The exhibition will not be streamed, but live stats will be available online at https://georgiadogs.com/sidearmstats/wsoc/summary.
Saturday's exhibition is the second meeting of this calendar year between Georgia and Kennesaw State, as the Bulldogs defeated the Owls, 2-1, in their spring opener on Feb. 25. The Owls went on to post an 8-8 spring record, which included a 1-0 loss to Liberty in the Atlantic Sun Tournament final.
On Tuesday evening, Georgia's defense stayed strong against No. 6 Duke before surrendering a goal in the 63rd minute, followed by a breakaway score seven minutes later. The Bulldogs recorded six shots in the match, including three combined from freshmen Isabella Muzzolini and Danielle Lewin. Senior goalkeeper Emory Wegener faced five shots from the Blue Devils' attack, posting three saves.
Georgia is looking to carry over the momentum from a strong close to the 2020-21 campaign (5-7-3, 2-3-2 SEC) which featured consecutive wins over Wake Forest and NC State. Additionally, the Bulldogs opened the season unbeaten in their first four games, including a home win over South Carolina and only the second road tie against Florida in program history.
Georgia returns 23 players from last season's squad, including a pair of fifth-year graduate students in forward Mollie Belisle and defender Kayla Bruster. Belisle led the Bulldogs with six goals last year, while Bruster was named to the United Soccer Coaches' All-Southeast Region Third Team for defense. Bruster is joined on the veteran backline by senior defender Cecily Stoute, who has started 50 games in her first three seasons in Athens. Senior midfielder Abby Boyan earned an All-Region Second Team selection with four goals, including three game winners. In goal, Wegener returns after starting 13 games last season, allowing only 1.24 goals against average and posting a 75.7 percent save rate and three shutouts. The returning production is complimented by a strong freshman class that features 14 newcomers to the roster.
Following Saturday's match, Georgia begins its regular season against Campbell on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
