Bulldogs Tie Gators on Neutral Ground, 1-1
March 29, 2021 | Soccer
ATLANTA, Ga. – After 110 minutes of play, the University of Georgia soccer team drew a 1-1 tie against the University of Florida Gators. The match was held on neutral ground at Georgia Sports Park in Atlanta.
The Bulldogs outshot the Gators 13-10 with eight landing on frame. Abby Boyan notched four while Mollie Belisle had two. Ashley Andersen recorded one shot on the day, but it would be the shot that put Georgia on the board.
Emory Wegener recorded six saves in the game. She faced eight from the Gators' offense.
"Really appreciate Florida meeting us here in Atlanta, a long trip for them and a weather change with a lot of uncertainty this week," said Head Coach Billy Lesesne. "It was a good opportunity to play against a very good team, so I thought the result was pretty fair. Both teams played hard and well, good to stretch us a bit with an overtime. We grew today and we look forward to playing at home. We have one less day than anticipated for recovery, so we'll get home and ready to play against Wake Forest on Saturday."
The Bulldogs would kick off the game with a goal from Andersen at the 4:40 mark. Boyan crossed the ball from the left side where Andersen pushed it past the keeper and into the net. Eleven minutes later, the Gators came back with an unassisted goal from Beata Olsson, who shot it within the 18-yard box.
The second half would stay even between the teams with Georgia and Florida ending regulation 1-1. Both overtime periods were a battle in the midfield. No shots occurred until the last ten minutes, one from Mallie McKenzie and the other from Florida's Maddy Rhodes.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this Saturday for their last home match of the season against Wake Forest at 11 a.m. ET.
