Georgia Tops Wake Forest at Home, 4-1
April 03, 2021 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia soccer team finished off its spring home slate with a 4-1 win over the Wake Forest Deacon Demons Saturday afternoon at Turner Soccer Complex.
Senior Mollie Belisle and Junior Dani Murguia led the Bulldogs with four shots each. Belisle put three on frame and two past the keeper while Murguia had two on net and two assists.
Sophomore Haley Sorrell scored her first goal of the season and Ashley Andersen headed the final goal of the game in the 64th minute.
"There's been a lot of rehearsal over the past few weeks, it's always nice," said Head Coach Billy Lesesne. "We've practiced a lot on our game field. We're just really comfortable with the spacing on our field and the timing of some of our runs. I think that helps, just the comfort level of our movement across the board. We've been pretty intentional about training and working outside in. We thought Wake Forest might try to drop centrally to protect a bit of the space that opens up in the center. We thought we may have to draw them out wide, and I thought we did a really nice job of that in the first half."
The first goal came in the 12th minute from Belisle, with assists from Murguia and Andersen. Murguia had the initial cross from the left side, almost scoring on the far-right post. Andersen deflected it back to the middle where Belisle finished.
Off a cross from Mallie McKenzie, Belisle scored again in the 22nd minute. The final goal of the half came six minutes later from Sorrell with an assist from Jessie Denney.
In the second half at the 61-minute mark, Wake Forest's Ryanne Brown played a ball to Shayla Smart past the Georgia backline. Smart dribbled into the box and scored off a breakaway.
Two minutes later, Andersen notched a header goal with a cross from Murguia. Lifting Georgia to its 4-1 home win over Wake Forest.
Next week, Georgia will finish off the 2020-21 regular season against North Carolina State. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
