Georgia Drops 3-1 Decision to No. 9 Clemson

March 20, 2021 | Soccer

CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Georgia soccer team fell short to No. 9 Clemson, 3-1, at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia's offense tallied 18 shots on the day. Dani Murguia had five, while Ashley Andersen and Mollie Belisle had four and three, respectively. Five other Bulldogs would contribute six more strikes against the Tigers.

"I thought we played hard today, well in moments, 18 shots and 11 corners it showed we were attacking with numbers and quality," Head Coach Billy Lesesne said. "We didn't get the finishes that we wanted. Started the game with a great goal early on and set a great tempo. Clemson is a very good opponent that stretches you in so many ways, I appreciate the opportunity to play against them. We got better and they got better, so it was a good day."

Georgia had a hot start, scoring two minutes into the first half. Mallie McKenzie placed a cross at the top of the six-yard box, where Belisle capitalized on the decision.

In the fourth minute, Clemson answered back with a point-blank shot right in front of Emory Wegener. The Tigers took the lead after 12 more minutes of play with another strike from within the 18-yard box.

Wegener would come out big in the final minutes of the first half, making a save off a Clemson penalty kick.

The second half would be a battle in the midfield between both teams. It wasn't until the 70th minute that Clemson's Maliah Morris would score her second goal of the day.

Georgia is back in action next Sunday against Florida.
