Georgia Falls to No. 16 Tigers in SEC Opener, 6-1
March 19, 2021 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – The 19th-ranked Georgia softball team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 16 Missouri Friday evening in the Southeastern Conference opener at Jack Turner Stadium.
Mary Wilson Avant (9-1) suffered her first loss in the circle in 2021. She worked six complete innings, giving up six unearned runs. She fanned six hitters and walked one. Freshman Britton Rogers pitched the final inning, retiring the Tigers in order.
At the plate, redshirt-sophomore Jaiden Fields picked up two hits, her fourth multi-hit game of the season. Junior Savana Sikes was responsible for Georgia's lone run, a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
"I thought Mary [Wilson Avant] used an opportunity to be successful out there," said head coach Lu Harris-Champer. "I thought she did a good job spinning her pitches. I thought Britton [Rogers] did a really good job coming in and getting three outs for us at the end of the game. Savana [Sikes] was clutch at bat, just really trusted her training and took good swings."
Missouri (20-4, 1-0) touched home first in the contest, plating three runs in the top half of the third. An RBI groundout to second scored the first Tiger run. Two batters later, Hatti Moore knocked a two-run home run to left center, widening the lead to 3-0 on the Bulldogs.
Sikes knocked her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center, in the bottom of the inning to get a run back for Georgia, 3-1.
Three Georgia (19-3, 0-1) miscues led to three Missouri runs in the top of the sixth as the Tigers lengthened their lead to 6-1.
The Bulldogs and Tigers face off again Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium. The televised game on SEC Network is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
