GREENSBORO, N.C. – With a time of 6:59.82 in the 800 freestyle relay, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team posted a strong start at the 2021 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Georgia placed fifth overall in the event, earning 28 points heading into the first full day of competition on Thursday. The Bulldogs finished second in the fourth of five timed finals heats, coming in second to SEC rival and eventual second-place finisher Kentucky. Virginia took the overall title with a time of 6:52.56.

Senior Courtney Harnish led off for Georgia with an opening 200 freestyle split of 1:44.71, her third-fastest mark of the season. Harnish was followed by freshmen Maxine Parker and Sloane Reinstein, who posted splits of 1:45.11 and 1:47.11 respectively. Sophomore Zoie Hartman closed out the race with an anchor leg of 1:42.89. Wednesday's outing was the best finish for Georgia in the 800 free relay since winning the event in 2016.

The NCAA Championships will kick into full gear Thursday with the first four individual events of the meet: the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 1-meter diving, as well as the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays in the evening session. Harnish is seeded second in the 500 free with Hartman seeded third in the 200 IM, while Georgia carries an SEC title in the 400 medley to Greensboro. Prelims start at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be available on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
