Bulldogs Head to Greensboro for NCAA Women’s Championships
March 16, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Following a one-year hiatus, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team joins the nation's top performers this week at the 2021 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by North Carolina State University at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The NCAA Championships open Wednesday, March 17 with one evening relay, followed by three full days of competition concluding on Saturday, March 20. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no spectators are allowed in the GAC. Live coverage of the meet will be available on ESPN3, with live results posted on NCAA.com and to subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
The fourth-ranked Georgia women carry 14 swimmers on their championships roster, tying for second-most overall with Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Bulldogs look to further the momentum from their strong finish at last month's SEC Championships, where they overcame an opening relay disqualification to place third with six gold medal-winning performances. Georgia will also seek to return to the NCAA top-10 for the first time since 2017. Under Tom Cousins Head Coach Jack Bauerle, the Bulldogs have posted 28 top-10 finishes, including 21 in the top five.
Georgia's contingent is led by senior Courtney Harnish, junior Dakota Luther, and sophomore Zoie Hartman, each of whom enter the meet as favorites in their respective events. Harnish is the No. 2 seed in the 500 freestyle, having won three-consecutive SEC titles in the event and finishing eighth at the 2019 NCAAs. She is also the sixth seed in the 200 butterfly, where Luther is the second seed after a school-record SEC championship outing. In her prior NCAA appearance, Luther took the B final in the 200 butterfly in 2019 and reached the C final in the 100 butterfly. Finally, Hartman makes her NCAA debut as the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, second seed in the 200 breaststroke, and third seed in the 200 IM.
Seeded sixth, freshman Maxine Parker is also a podium contender in the 100 freestyle, one of three events she will race in Greensboro. Parker is one of seven Bulldogs with full programs this week, including seniors Danielle Della Torre and Gabi Fa'amausili and juniors Callie Dickinson and Maddie Homovich. Senior Olivia Anderson returns to NCAAs for the first time since 2018, carrying the No. 9 seed in the 1,650 freestyle, while senior Sammie Burchill, juniors Portia Brown and Tatum Smith, sophomore Jillian Barczyk, and freshman Sloane Reinstein will each make their first national championship appearances.
Following this week's meet, the fourth-ranked Georgia men will head to Greensboro for the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. Currently, 14 Bulldogs are slated to participate as the team goes for its first top-five finish since 2016.
