Tate Delivers 12th Inning Walk-Off For A Sweep

ATHENS -- Georgia junior Connor Tate delivered a 12th-inning walk-off single for a 3-2 win over Lipscomb Sunday and sweep the three-game series.
The Bulldogs (13-3) had blanked the Bison for the first 26 innings of the series until they rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth. In the 12th, Ben Anderson reached on a one-out single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Lipscomb (5-5) opted to intentionally walk freshman Corey Collins, Tate delivered his second career walk-off base hit as Anderson raced home. In 2019, Tate ended the longest game in Georgia history with a run-scoring single in the 20th inning to beat Clemson. On Sunday, Georgia collected its fourth walk-off of the 2021 season.
Bulldog sophomore right-hander Jonathan Cannon made his second start on a pitch count and tossed four shutout innings. The game was delayed after three innings when home plate umpire Danny Everett left the game following getting hit with a foul ball in the mask earlier in the contest. When play resumed with only three umpires, Bison senior Haddon Addams smacked a leadoff double. He would make it to third with one out. Georgia brought the infield in and Cannon came back to register a strikeout and a groundout to extend his career scoreless innings streak to 17.1.
Freshman Jaden Woods followed Cannon and provided four innings before leaving in the ninth when the Bison rallied. Liam Sullivan, Jack Gowen and Ben Harris took care of the final four frames. Harris notched his first victory, registering three strikeouts over 1.2 innings including throwing out Tiger Borom who tried to steal home in the 12th.
In the bottom of the fourth, Collins beat a defensive shift with a double off the left field wall. With two outs, junior Josh McAllister made it 1-0 with a RBI-single. A bases-loaded hit by pitch on Tate gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage in the fifth.
Georgia returns to action Tuesday in Greenville, S.C., when it faces Wofford at Fluor Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. and will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

"Adversity is good. Adversity can help you get better. Certainly it is better when you can get on the winning side of adversity which we did today. It would have been a tough loss because we had the game in control, we had chances to extend the lead and didn't do it, we made some mistakes that almost came back to bite us. But to have some adversity, to have somethings not go your way and to also make mental mistake you can learn from--its a lot more fun to learn from your mistakes when you still win. That's what we did today."

"What goes through my mind is to not get too big and play hard. When I try to get too big, I start pulling my head and start missing. I just focused on hitting the ball hard and up the middle. It was a big win."

"It's a huge confidence booster to go out there and throw key pitches and get out of an inning, and then my defense playing well behind me always makes it easier. That will mean a lot coming into SEC play and going into games that are used to having those kinds of innings."
