No. 3 Bulldogs Gear Up for First Road Matches

Athens, Ga. -- The No. 3 Georgia women's tennis team is slated to play in their first road matches of the 2021 spring season beginning on Friday, Feb. 26 against Ole Miss and then Sunday, Feb. 28 against Mississippi State with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET, respectively.

The Rebels will host the Bulldogs with a 5-3 overall record and a conference record of 1-1. Bulldogs defeated Ole Miss in a 4-0 sweep in Oxford last season. Their last time out, Ole Miss defeated Missouri 4-0 in Columbia, Mo. The Rebels have one singles player ranked in Sabina Machalova who comes in at No. 39. In doubles, two Rebel duos are ranked in No. 24 Macalova and Alexa Bortles and at No. 44 is Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova.

Mississippi State hosts Georgia with an 8-2 overall record and a conference record of 0-2. Last season, Georgia defeated the Bulldogs 4-0 in Starkville which earned Head Coach Jeff Wallace his 750th career win. Their last time out, Mississippi State fell 4-0 to Arkansas and will play Tennessee before hosting Georgia. Mississippi State has one singles player ranked in No. 69 Emma Antonaki and in doubles, they have one ranked duo in No. 41 Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine.

Last time out, the Bulldogs swept No. 19 Tennessee 4-0 in their first conference match of the season. In that match, senior Katarina Jokic inched one win closer to earning 100 career singles wins, she is currently at 92. Graduate Elena Christofi is seven doubles wins away from crossing the same the same threshold.

Sophomore Lea Ma was named the first SEC Newcomer of the Week, a new award designated to athletes who are currently sophomores and did not have a chance to win Freshman of the Week during conference play last season. This is the second weekly conference award Ma has won, winning SEC Freshman of the Week last season during non-conference.

As a team, Georgia moved up to No. 3 in this week's ITA rankings. The Bulldogs have now spent 58 weeks in the top-10 with the last time Georgia falling outside the top-10 was Feb. 21, 2017 coming in at No. 13.

Georgia will return home for a weekend of matches against Florida and South Carolina. The first match will be March 5 against the Gators followed by a match with the Gamecocks on March 7 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
