Bulldogs Earn Five Wins on Opening Night of Tech Invite

ATLANTA – With four individual wins and a relay victory, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team posted a solid opening day of action Thursday at the Georgia Tech Invitational at the McAuley Aquatic Center. Through one day of competition, the ninth-ranked Georgia women sit in first place with 393 points, with the men standing fifth at 181 points.

Freshman Abby McCulloh opened the evening with a dominant first-place time of 4:39.17 in the 500 freestyle, setting the nation's top time for the second time Thursday following a 4:41.72 in the morning prelims. Behind McCulloh, freshmen Duné Coetzee (4:42.04) and Mia Abruzzo (4:46.83), along with sophomore Jillian Barczyk (4:47.10) earned B-cuts with season-best times, as Georgia placed five in the A final. In the men's 500 free, sophomore Tommy-Lee Camblong picked up a provisional cut as he placed 12th with a season-best time of 4:19.80.

In the women's 200 IM, junior Zoie Hartman took first with a season-best B-cut of 1:55.20, moving her into the top-five times nationally. The 200 IM was another impressive showing for the Georgia women, with seniors Danielle Della Torre (1:57.64) and Callie Dickinson (1:58.09) also finishing in the top five with B-cuts. On the men's side, junior Zach Hils finished second with a season-best B-cut of 1:44.52.

The Bulldogs were also strong in the sprint events, prevailing in both 50 freestyle races. Senior Gabi Fa'amausili earned the win in the women's race, with sophomore Maxine Parker and Hartman notching B-cuts, while junior Dillon Downing tied with Florida's Adam Chaney at 19.18.

Fa'amausili and Hartman would team with Parker and senior Dakota Luther to earn first place in the 400 medley relay with a B-cut of 3:33.23. Downing led off the men's 200 freestyle relay, joining Hils, sophomore Wesley Ng and junior Riley Scruggs to place third with a time of 1:18.25, moving into fourth in the all-time program rankings.

At the diving well, Georgia turned in a robust performance on the springboards. Sophomore Meghan Wenzel finished second in the 1-meter final with a score of 285.75, following a fifth-place mark of 267.15 in prelims. In the men's 3-meter, senior Zach Allen placed eighth with a mark of 310.00, following a season-best 316.30 in the morning session.

The Georgia Tech Invitational continues Friday with the morning session beginning at 10 a.m. featuring prelims in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's 3-meter, and men's 1-meter. The evening session starts at 5:30 p.m. and will also include finals in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. The action will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
