Georgia Battles Strong Field at Georgia Tech Invitational
November 17, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Following an impressive opening to dual competition, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team closes its fall season with the Georgia Tech Invitational, running Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20 at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
The meet will feature a prelims session beginning each morning at 10 a.m. EST, followed by afternoon diving sessions and the finals session at 5:30 p.m. EST. The meet will not be streamed, but live results will be available to paid subscribers of the MeetMobile app.
This weekend's meet provides Georgia's swimmers and divers the opportunity to become acquainted with the McAuley Aquatic Center, which will host the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, Women's Championships, and Men's Championships this coming March. The Bulldogs, currently ranked eighth in the men's CSCAA rankings and ninth in the women's, will be joined at the meet by Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and the Iowa women's diving team.
Thursday's action opens with the 500 freestyle, which will feature a showdown between sophomore Jake Magahey and Florida senior Kieran Smith, the top two finishers in both last year's SEC and NCAA Championships. At SECs, the two swimmers posted the two fastest short-course 500 freestyle times in American history. On the women's side, freshman Abby McCulloh will look to continue her terrific start, having won the 500 twice already this season. Thursday will also include the 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, men's 3-meter, and women's 1-meter.
On Friday, junior Zoie Hartman carries her unbeaten record this season in breaststroke events into the 100 breaststroke, while sophomore Luca Urlando headlines the 100 butterfly. Urlando has finished first in each of his individual outings this season, currently holding the nation's top time in both butterflies and the No. 2 time in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM. Other Friday events include the 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay, men's 1-meter, and women's 3-meter.
The meet closes Saturday with the first 1,650 freestyle event of the season for the Bulldogs. Magahey, last season's NCAA runner-up, will battle Florida's two-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke, while McCulloh will take on the Gators' Elise Bauer in her college mile debut. In the 200 butterfly, senior Dakota Luther has prevailed in each butterfly race this season, while on the men's side, Urlando and senior Andrew Abruzzo have been impressive throughout the fall. The final day of competition also includes the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 400 freestyle relay, and both men's and women's platform diving.
Following the Tech Invitational, Georgia will return to training before gearing up for the championship stretch beginning in January with the Tennessee Diving Invitational and a dual meet against Alabama at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
