Georgia Travels to Florida for Annual Rivalry Renewal
October 28, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – In the annual renewal of one of college swimming's greatest rivalries, the eighth-ranked University of Georgia swimming and diving team heads south to face No. 3/No. 9 Florida Friday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida. The meet will open with women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter diving on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. EDT, followed by the full meet on Friday at 10 a.m. EDT. Friday's meet will not be streamed, but live results will be available to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
In the all-time series, the Georgia women lead by a 20-16 margin, while in the men's series, Florida holds a 65-20-3 advantage. Last season, the Bulldogs swept the Gators at Gabrielsen Natatorium, with the men winning 165.5-134.5 and the women prevailing 184-116.
Georgia enters the meet following a successful opening weekend doubleheader against North Carolina and South Carolina. In both meets, the Bulldogs shined in sweeps with 20 different swimmers winning a combined 44 races. Georgia swept the SEC Swimmer of the Week awards as sophomore Luca Urlando and freshman Abby McCulloh were both honored. Urlando swept the butterfly events against North Carolina before posting the nation's top time in the 100 backstroke against South Carolina. McCulloh opened her career with three wins, including the nation's No. 2 time in the 1,000 freestyle against North Carolina. Finally, freshman Duné Coetzee received Women's Freshman of the Week honors with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
Florida again stands to be one of the nation's top programs as head coach Anthony Nesty adds women's head coaching duties to his role this season. The Florida men edged out Georgia at last year's SEC Championships before both teams eventually finished in the top four at the NCAA Championships. The Gators return two of the world's best swimmers in seniors Bobby Finke and Kieran Smith. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Finke was one of America's top performers as he won both the 800m and 1,500m freestyle in thrilling finishes, while Smith earned bronze in the 400m freestyle. The Florida women are led by senior Vanessa Pearl, who finished second in the 200 IM at SECs, and junior Talia Bates, who reached the finals in two events at SECs.
