Georgia Closes Weekend with South Carolina Sweep

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a season-opening victory over North Carolina Friday, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team completed its Carolina doubleheader with a sweep of South Carolina Saturday afternoon at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
 
In the men's meet, Georgia topped South Carolina, 175-114, while the Bulldog women prevailed over the Gamecocks by a 167-125 margin. Overall, the Bulldogs won 23 combined events in the meet.
 
Sophomore Jake Magahey was again dominant in the distance events, winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:24.97 after posting a 9:02.78 in the 1,000 freestyle. In other freestyle events, juniors Dillon Downing, Zach Hils, and Bradley Dunham each earned a victory. The Bulldogs notched B-cut times in both backstroke events with sophomore Luca Urlando tallying a 46.32 in the 100 and Grum dropping a 1:44.44 in the 200. Senior Andrew Abruzzo also grabbed a B-cut in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:45.72, while posting the top 200 IM time of 1:48.47 in exhibition.
 
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Harrison Wayner prevailed with a mark of 55.66, while sophomore Connor Haigh earned his first career win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.50. Sophomore Wesley Ng won for the second-straight day with a winning time of 48.05 in the 100 butterfly. Wayner and Ng joined Urlando and Downing to post a first-place time of 1:27.65 in the opening 200 medley relay.
 
On the women's side, Georgia displayed its strong depth as nine different swimmers earned a win. Senior Gabi Fa'amausili swept the distance events with times of 22.78 and 50.01 respectively. Fellow fifth-year Danielle Della Torre also posted the top time in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, although the IM was an exhibition event. Freshman Abby McCulloh impressed again in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:48.39, while fellow rookies Duné Coetzee (500 free), Eboni McCarty (100 back), and Mia Abruzzo (200 fly) all earned wins, with Abruzzo joining her brother Andrew in a sibling sweep of the fly. In other events, junior Zoie Hartman earned a B-cut in the 100 breaststroke, Sloane Reinstein took the 200 freestyle, and senior Callie Dickinson won the 100 butterfly.
 
At the diving well, sophomore Meghan Wenzel placed second in the 3-meter with a mark of 251.70, followed shortly behind by Tally Brown (247.50) and Ellie Crump (247.43). In the men's 1-meter, freshman Nolan Lewis again posted the Bulldogs' top mark with a third-place score of 293.93.
 
Georgia now heads on the road for the remainder of the fall, beginning with a dual meet next week at rival Florida. The meet opens with a diving session on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m., followed by the full meet on Friday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.
