Georgia Earns Scoreless Draw at South Carolina
October 15, 2021 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, S.C. – After a scoreless 110 minutes, the University of Georgia soccer team tied the South Carolina Gamecocks, 0-0, in front of 1,911 spectators Friday night at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
"South Carolina is a very good team," said head coach Billy Lesesne. "It was a tough battle, we gave up a lot of corner kicks but I thought we defended those well. We fought through a really tough 110 minutes, I'm proud of the effort and excited about playing in front of our fans on Thursday night against Florida. I can't wait for that opportunity. After tonight it's time to rest, recover and get ready."
The Georgia (10-3-2, 3-2-2 SEC) defense kept South Carolina (9-4-1, 4-2-1 SEC) from finishing any chances as senior goalkeeper Emory Wegener had six saves on the night, notching her 18th career shutout. Senior midfielder Abby Boyan led the Bulldogs offensively with four shots, while forwards Dani Murguia and Mollie Belisle had three.
The first half remained nil between the divisional foes, but Georgia's offense tested South Carolina's backline heavily as they outshot the Gamecocks 7-3. Boyan led the Red and Black with three chances, with the first coming five minutes in with a rocket that missed over the upper right corner. Four other Bulldogs posted a shot in the opening period.
Georgia's defense shined in the second half as Wegener came out big early on to keep the Bulldogs in the match. She tipped the ball over the net to cause a South Carolina corner kick and made the ensuing save to keep the score at zeroes. Wegener persisted and led the backline, making five additional saves throughout the half, with Murguia also stopping a ball inside the net. Offensively, the Bulldogs stayed on point as they created multiple chances but were unable to finish in the final third. South Carolina's defense kept Georgia to only two shots on frame.
After a full 90 minutes, the game went into overtime. Georgia and South Carolina battled it out on each end of the field, but the Bulldogs eventually worked to run out the clock and preserve the one-point result.
Georgia returns home next week as it plays host to Florida on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free for all spectators and the match will be aired on ESPNU.
