Seven Bulldogs to Compete as Georgia Hosts Diving Zones
March 08, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Seven University of Georgia divers will compete in their home diving well this week as the Bulldogs host the 2020 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The meet opens Monday, March 9 and continues through Wednesday, March 11.
Georgia is one of 17 institutions represented at the event, including SEC rivals Alabama, Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. Over three days, 101 divers will compete to advance to the NCAA Championships, held in Athens (women's) and Indianapolis (men's) over the next two weeks.
The competition begins Monday with women's 1-meter prelims at 11 a.m., followed by finals at approximately 1:30 p.m. The men's 3-meter will start at 3:45 p.m., with finals at 6 p.m. In each event, the 18-diver finals will begin 15 minutes after the conclusion of prelims. Tuesday's action follows the same schedule, while Wednesday's platform competition will begin at 10 a.m. Live results will be available on Divemeets.com.
In the men's competition, Zone B is guaranteed 10 spots in the 1-meter, with eight reserved for the 3-meter and platform. For the women, 7 spots are slotted in the springboard events and eight will automatically advance on the platform. Additionally, if a diver qualifies in one event, they can compete at NCAAs if they place in the top 12 in any of their remaining events. The final list of qualified divers will be announced on Sunday, March 15.
For the Lady Bulldogs, seniors McKensi Austin and Freida Lim will compete in all three events as they both look to stay in Athens for NCAAs. Austin has reached nationals in each of her first three seasons, while Lim was an Honorable Mention All-American last season on the platform. Sophomores Ellie Crump (1-meter / 3-meter) and Kelliann Howell (platform) return to Zones for a second year, while freshman Raquel Mason makes her debut on the platform.
For the Georgia men, juniors Zach Allen and Josh Getty will compete on the 1- and 3-meter springboards. This is the third Zones appearance for Getty and second for Allen, who has earned six wins this season and was named SEC Diver of the Week on Nov. 26.
