Georgia Closes Regular Season at Bulldog Invitational

March 01, 2020 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Strong performances from both veterans and newcomers ruled the day as University of Georgia swimming and diving concluded the Bulldog Invitational Sunday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Sunday's meet was highlighted by terrific swims in the 100 backstroke as junior Youssef Said tallied a season-best mark of 46.30 that placed him first in prelims. For the Lady Bulldogs, sophomore Portia Brown notched the 10th-fastest time in program history with her winning time of 53.02 in the evening final.

Sophomore Caleb Harrington improved his NCAA standing in the men's 200 butterfly with a personal-best time of 1:44.56, and in the women's 200, freshman Mady Bragg posted a season-best time of 2:00.76. Fellow freshman Ashley McCauley placed first in the 200 breaststroke final with a B-cut of 2:12.46, while senior Lexi Glunn added another B-cut with her time of 2:13.71.

In the women's 100 freestyle, senior Sandra Scott closed her Georgia career with a time of 51.25, tying her previous personal best. Earlier in the men's prelims, sophomore Ananda Lim (44.28) and junior Teagan Cheney (44.34) posted personal-best times as well.

"(Scott's) one of my favorite kids I've ever had the pleasure to coach. She's the best they get," said Tom Cousins Head Coach Jack Bauerle. "What you always want to see is them to grow up and get a little better at what they do. She was fully committed. We gave her a spot and she took advantage of it. She's a tremendous student and she's going to be successful. I'm going to miss her like crazy. She's one of the best kids that's ever walked through here."

In the evening time trials, the Bulldogs continued to amass more B-cuts, including the first of the season for junior Joshua Fulcher in the 500 freestyle (4:21.13). Freshman Charlie Logan grabbed a second B-cut for the weekend with his 200 backstroke time of 1:43.74, while sophomore Maddie Homovich posted a season-best B-cut of 1:54.64. Finally, senior Jackson Ford closed the meet with a personal-best 100 breaststroke time of 53.47, tying him for eighth all-time in program history.

"I can't say enough about Charlie Logan, our local guy," said Bauerle. "He did a great job in the 200 back and 500 free. Charlie will be a really important guy for this team next year. I love having him on our team and he's one of our hardest workers. To see all his work come to fruition is pretty cool."

At the diving well, three Bulldogs clinched spots in the Zone B championships, while sophomore Ellie Crump picked up her second event in the competition. After qualifying for the 3-meter in October, Crump tallied a mark of 280.05 on the 1-meter. Junior Josh Getty qualified for Zones with new personal-best marks on the 1-meter (321.38) and 3-meter (347.25). In the women's platform, freshman Raquel Mason (241.38) and sophomore Kelliann Howell (234.60) advanced to Zones.

The seven qualified Georgia divers will remain home for the Zone B championships beginning on Monday, March 9 at Gabrielsen, with action continuing through Wednesday, March 11. The NCAA will announce the qualifying women's swimmers on Wednesday, March 4, followed by the men's participants on March 11.
