RIO MAR, P.R. — Georgia shot 7-over 295 in Monday's second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The Bulldogs are in seventh place on the team leaderboard at the Rio Mar Country Club, while Caterina Don, Jenny Bae and Caroline Craig all are in top-20 spots in the individual field.
"Through 12-13 holes, we were around even-par or even 1-under," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We had a couple of mental decisions after that that really hurt us, and we have to correct. It's hard to tell some times with golfers spread out over several holes, but I think we were in the lead. Thirty holes into the tournament, we were leading.
"We'll go out tomorrow and try to post a score," Brewer added. "We still believe we can win this golf tournament. We're ready for the challenge and know we have the firepower to make up the ground we need to and post a really low score."
Georgia's counting scores on Monday included a 1-under 71 from Don, a 73 from Céleste Dao, a 74 from Bae and a 77 from Candice Mahe. The Bulldogs dropped Jo Hua Hung's 78. In addition, Craig, who is competing as an individual, shot even-par 72.
Don, Bae and Craig are in 11th, 12th and 17th places, respectively. Don is at even-par 144, while Bae is at 145 and Craig is at 146. Mahe is tied for 38th at 150, Dao is tied for 45th at 151 and Hung is tied for 55th at 153.
Don, a freshman from Pinerolo, Italy, notched her eighth par-or-better score in 13 rounds this season. She teed off from No. 5 and reached the "turn" at even after a bogey at No. 7 and a birdie at No. 8. Birdies at No. 13 and No. 15 pushed Don to 2-under through 11 holes, but she returned to even following consecutive bogeys at No. 18 and No. 1. Don wrapped up her loop with a birdie at No. 4.
Texas Tech posted the only under-par team score of the day and moved atop the field in the process. The Red Raiders are at 579, three shots ahead of No. 14 Oklahoma State. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Virginia Tech at 583, Purdue and Northwestern at 584, Kentucky at 586, the Bulldogs at 587, N.C. State at 592, ECU at 598 and Augusta at 599.
Georgia will be paired with N.C. State and ECU for Tuesday's final round, which will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgurn start. The Bulldogs opening on holes Nos. 8-10. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
