January 02, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Following the holiday break, University of Georgia diving returns to action this weekend with the Tennessee Diving Invitational at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
Georgia is one of 13 institutions represented at the Invitational, including host Tennessee and fellow SEC rivals Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and LSU. The three-day event opens Friday, Jan. 3 at 11:30 a.m., followed by later rounds on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
Friday will feature prelims and finals in the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter springboard, with the women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter springboard on Saturday. The Invitational concludes Sunday with men's and women's platform events.
The Bulldog divers return to Knoxville six weeks after a successful performance in the Tennessee Invitational. Junior Zach Allen helped lead the Bulldog men to a first-place finish with a team-high 57 points, earning SEC Men's Diver of the Week honors. In the 3-meter final, Allen set a new personal record with a score of 371.85, earning the top score in three of six rounds.
Later, in the 1-meter springboard, he set another PR with his winning score of 354.80, taking first in five rounds. He also placed first in the 1-meter prelims with a score of 328.65. In the closing platform event, Allen finished as the runner-up, scoring a mark of 247.50. Three of Allen's springboard scores eclipsed the NCAA auto-qualifying standard, giving him five such marks for the season. Dating back to his performance at Florida, he has placed first in his last four springboard finals.
For the Lady Bulldogs, senior McKensi Austin contributed with runner-up finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter finals, as well as a fourth-place finish in the platform. In the 1-meter, Austin's score of 296.05 was the highest of any Lady Bulldog this season. Elsewhere in the platform final, 2019 All-American Freida Lim took first with a zone-qualifying score of 261.60, with Austin and sophomore Kelliann Howell placing in the top five.
Live scoring will be available online at DiveMeets, followed by full recaps of each day of competition. Following this weekend's action, the full Georgia swimming and diving team will return for their home opener against M No. 4 / W No. 19 Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
