Georgia Wins 5-1 at Missouri
September 29, 2019 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. --- The University of Georgia soccer team used a collective offensive effort to defeat the Missouri Tigers, 5-1, at Walton Stadium on Sunday evening.
Sophomore Dani Murguia, junior Ashley Andersen, senior Daria Stan, and freshman Chloe Champan all contributed goals to the Bulldogs' SEC road victory. The Bulldogs (5-4-2, 1-1-1 SEC) took 13 total shots during the game with 11 being on frame.
"That was a great game and I am proud of this team," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "It was a great response today, coming off a tough game against LSU where we had a lot of chances and didn't take advantage of those. I thought today- 13 shots, with 11 of those on frame and scoring five goals was just a great team effort. Missouri is a high energy, high effort team. We matched that today and were able to take home the result. I am excited to train again this week and keep improving as a group. We are starting to see some continued growth in this team."
The Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute after Katie Ralys served the ball to Dani Murguia for the score. Missouri (6-4-1, 0-2-1 SEC) answered with the equalizer two minutes later.
Georgia regained the lead in the 29th minute after a foul gave the Bulldogs a free kick opportunity. Reagan Glisson took the kick from the left side of the box and Ashley Andersen was there for the finish.
The Bulldogs were able to apply even more offensive pressure in the second half, scoring three more goals and taking eight shots compared to the Tigers' six.
A Georgia foul inside the box at the 63-minute mark gave the Tigers a penalty kick opportunity, but sophomore goalkeeper Emory Wegener made the diving save to hold onto the one-goal lead for the Bulldogs. This marks her fifth penalty kick save.
The Bulldogs maintained momentum and four minutes later senior Daria Stan cushioned the lead for Georgia, scoring her first goal of the season.
Freshman Chloe Chapman went on a breakaway and added to the Bulldogs' score in the 76th minute then did it again six minutes later with another goal to seal the victory. The Mitchelleville, Maryland native leads the team with five goals this season. Andersen and Glisson follow with three goals each.
The Bulldogs return home to Athens to face No. 15 Vanderbilt on Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex.
