Georgia Falls to Vanderbilt, 1-0
October 04, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia soccer team fell to Vanderbilt, 1-0, at the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday night.
"I'm really pleased with our effort tonight," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Obviously Vanderbilt is a very talented team, very mature. They've managed games before and it came down to a set-piece execution. They've been very good on set pieces for a long time. We worked at it all week and they took advantage of a situation that kind of changed the game. I thought we fought the entire time, created some decent opportunities. And again, I think if we get that kind of resolve and that kind of battle we'll put ourselves in a great place in this league."
The Bulldog defense started strong, keeping the Commodores out of the final third until their first shot 28 minutes into the game.
Georgia made great short passes at midfield to turn on the attack but three offside calls against them prevented finishes and the scoreboard remained clean after 45 minutes of play.
Vanderbilt took the lead at the 52-minute mark after a free kick opportunity was served into the box and headed into the goal.
Freshman Chloe Chapman turned on the attack within the last five minutes of play, but the Commodores broke it up to secure the win.
Georgia finished with six shots, four on frame, and goalkeeper Emory Wegener made three saves.
Georgia is on the road this week at Tennessee on Thursday, October 10 at 7 pm., before returning home to face Ole Miss on Sunday, October 13 at the Turner Soccer Complex. That match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
