Bulldogs Fall in Physical Battle to Tennessee

October 10, 2019 | Soccer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Georgia soccer team fell, 1-0, in a physical battle to the Tennessee Volunteers at Regal Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs committed 19 fouls and drew four yellow cards in the loss. The lone goal for the Volunteers came from a penalty kick in the 46th minute of the game.

"It was a typical Thursday night in the SEC," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "It was a very hard-fought, competitive game. Both teams played hard. It was physical. In a game that went back and forth with a lot of play between the 18s, they were able to draw a penalty kick that set things up for them to get the win. I thought we battled throughout. It was a tough road game in a tough atmosphere, but I thought we handled it well and fought really hard. I'm disappointed to not get the result, but I'm proud of the effort of our players."

Georgia controlled possession for much of the first half, although the Volunteers took six shots compared to the Bulldogs' four, and the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes of play.

The Volunteers came out on the attack to start the second half. Tennessee had a quick shot that was defended by a collective Bulldog effort, but a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick. The kick was good and Tennessee took the lead in the 46th minute.

Abby Boyan took a promising shot in the 50thminute, but the Volunteer goalkeeper made an impressive save to keep the one-goal lead. She led the Bulldogs with three shots in the game, two of which were on frame.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emory Wegener made six saves for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs return home for the annual Kick for a Cure game against Ole Miss on Sunday, October 13 at 2 p.m. The team will wear pink jerseys to support the fight against Breast Cancer.
