Bulldogs Defeat Rebels In Come Back Win

October 13, 2019 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- After a scoreless first half, the University of Georgia soccer team scored two unanswered goals in a comeback win over the Ole Miss Rebels with a final score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex.

Trailing 1-0, junior Reagan Glisson scored the equalizer in the 70th minute, marking her fourth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, a foul in the box gave the Bulldogs (6-6-2, 2-3-1 SEC) a penalty kick opportunity and Dani Murguia took the lead, resulting in a win for Georgia.

"We were really resilient," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Coming off two difficult losses in our last two conference games—both 1-0 losses- to go down a goal here in the second half it took a lot of fight and a lot of spirit. It was really good to see us get rewarded. I feel like we have played well in matches and just didn't get that break. Reagan [Glisson]'s goal really was a big one that gave us confidence and we followed it up quickly with a PK opportunity. Again, really pleased with our effort all over the field. Today we had a really good opportunity to get three massive points in the league."

The Rebels (8-4-2, 2-2-2 SEC) and Bulldogs shared possession in the first half and Ole Miss played good defense to ensure a clean scoreboard at the end of 45 minutes of play.  Georgia went into the locker room after taking eight shots.

Both teams turned it on to start the second half.  The Bulldogs had a promising look in the 52nd minute when the ball was passed to Mallie McKenzie, who crossed it to Haley Sorrell. The ball got pushed out and was set up for Abby Boyan to take a shot from the top of the box.  She attempted the shot over the goalkeeper's head, but the ball went high of the net.

Ole Miss struck first in the 54th minute after Channing Foster had three Georgia defenders on her but was able to pass the ball to Haleigh Stackpole for the score.

The Bulldogs continued on the attack with a few good attempts but could not capitalize until the 70-minute mark when Glisson maneuvered around the Rebels and booted the ball into the far left corner of the net from the right side of the box for the equalizer.

"I think it's hard because when we do get scored on there's a change of momentum for everyone," Glisson said. "This game it made a difference. We didn't drop as much as we have before and kept the pedal to the metal."

Georgia did not let up.  Less than two minutes after tying the game, Chloe Chapman drew a foul in the box to give Georgia a penalty kick and Murguia scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs.

"I think it was a very exhilarating and scary experience to have that pressure for the PK," Murguia said. "We practice PKs a lot in practice and I did really well with mine this week. Having a good week in practice gave me confidence to place it well and finish for my team."

The Bulldogs ended the game with 16 shots, five on target, and goalkeeper Emory Wegener made four saves.

Georgia will travel to Starkville to face the Bulldogs of Mississippi State on Sunday, October 20 at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
