Georgia Wins 1-0 in an Overtime Thriller in Starkville
October 20, 2019 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The University of Georgia soccer team defeated Mississippi State 1-0 in overtime at MSU Stadium Sunday evening.
Sophomore Abby Boyan was able to put the ball in the back of the net with one minute left in the first overtime period after assists by senior Keely Cartrett and junior Ashley Andersen.
"Just an outstanding team effort," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "All over the field, it got stretched obviously in overtime, both really tired teams. I do think our depth helped us in this game and to get a finish in overtime on the road is really big in this league. I'm just incredibly proud of this team and the effort they put forward. To earn this result is really big for our program."
The feat marks the first overtime SEC win for the Bulldogs (7-6-1, 3-3-1 SEC) since defeating Mississippi State 4-3 in two overtime periods in 2011.
Despite Georgia taking 14 shots in regulation compared to Mississippi State (7-7-1, 2-4-1 SEC) 10, neither were able to capitalize and were forced into extra time.
Georgia's closest goal attempt in the second half came at the 55-minute mark when junior Reagan Glisson served it into the box to sophomore Dani Murguia, who booted it just barely right of the goal.
Goalkeeper Emory Wegener was able to halt a crowded box multiple times in the second, making two key diving saves to keep Georgia in the game. Wegener recorded four saves on the evening.
The scoreboard remained clean after the first half with Georgia taking eight shots but only two on goal. Wegener kept the Mississippi State attack under control with two impressive saves, including one penalty-kick dive.
Georgia had multiple looks in the first 45 minutes of play by six different Bulldogs. Glisson, Boyan, Andersen, sophomore Bella Ponzi, junior Katie Ralys and freshman Haley Sorrell all fired shots. Boyan was able to display her shiftiness for the first time with three minutes left in the half, working around a defender and forcing a diving save.
The Bulldogs return home on Thursday, October 24 to take on Kentucky at 7 p.m at the Turner Soccer Complex.
