Georgia Plays to 1-1 Draw Against LSU
September 26, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- After scoring a goal in the first five minutes of the game, the University of Georgia soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the LSU Tigers on Thursday night at the Turner Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs (4-4-2, 0-1-1 SEC ) controlled the entire game offensively, firing 34 total shots. The LSU (2-6-2, 0-1-1) goalkeeper Emma Grace Goldman made an impressive 16 saves to keep the Tigers in the game.
"I thought that it was our best collective attack from a shot perspective," head coach Billy Lesesne said after the game. "I thought that their goalkeeper played exceptionally well and sometimes soccer can be a cruel game. But, we need to be better in some of those situations to tuck balls away. The study we did on the goalkeeper said that she was really good in the air, so we tried to finish balls on the ground, which we weren't able to do so today. I thought the buildup play into the final third was the best it's been all season, so that's the good thing to take out of it. The negative side of it is that we weren't as precise as we needed to be finishing."
The Bulldogs came out on the attack early and were able to get on the board at the 3-minute mark after Katie Ralys fed the ball to Reagan Glisson from the far left corner of the field into the middle of the box for the goal.
Georgia continued the pressure and had 19 shots in the first 45 minutes, ten of which were on target.
Abby Boyan, Daria Stan, and Chloe Chapman each had five shots, with Dani Murguia and Katie Ralys contributing four apiece.
With less than five minutes left in the game, LSU scored the equalizer to force overtime. The Bulldogs had seven shots in the extra 20 minutes of play, but could not find the net for the golden goal.
Georgia held LSU to five total shots in the 110 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs continue SEC play on the road at Missouri on Sunday, September 29 at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
