Andersen Leads Bulldogs to Victory Over Furman

September 22, 2019 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- Two goals from junior Ashley Andersen led the University of Georgia soccer team to a shutout victory over Furman on Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex.

This marked the first career goals for the Clifton, Virginia native.  With the win, Georgia (4-4-1, 0-1 SEC) remains undefeated at home on Sunday afternoons and while wearing white jerseys.

"We had a really short turnaround from Friday's game and then with all of the activities yesterday on campus (with the Georgia football game against Notre Dame) I thought our team responded really well," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Furman came after us, we weathered the storm for the first 15 minutes, then we settled in. When our substitutions came in our depth really showed. It was nice to get two goals there in the first. In the second half, I thought we managed the game well. It was a testament to the depth of our team and the quality of players we have out there on the field."

After getting off to a slow start, the Bulldogs made a lineup change about midway through the first half.  Two minutes later, Andersen gave the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead off an assist from freshman Tori Wheeler

Three minutes later, it was Andersen again; this time the ball was served from senior Daria Stan.  The Bulldogs carried the 2-0 lead into the locker room at half time and were able to maintain for the rest of the game.

"The opportunities and matchups just worked out," Lesesne continued. "Ashley had two opportunities, and she put them both on frame and finished both of them. Finishing in the right places is really important. She picked placement over power. She really challenged for the ball in the air and put it in the back of the net. She found herself in the 18-yard box, which is where games are won and lost."

"We were never tired because we were excited," Andersen said. "So many subs were coming in and everyone was giving it their all, which is really important, especially on a hot day. We won as a team, not just one person or individually. It was a really good way to end the weekend with two goals too. We're all excited to come back on Thursday and bring that energy again."

Georgia took 10 total shots, with Stan being the only other Bulldog to put the ball on frame.  The Paladins had two of their six shots on target, but sophomore goalkeeper Emory Wegener was able to keep the scoreboard clean for her third shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs' first SEC game at home is Thursday, September 26 against LSU, before hitting the road to face Missouri in Columbia on Sunday, September 29.
