EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 306 in Monday's opening round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional at the Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Bulldogs were steady throughout the lineup, with all five golfers posting scores in the 70s.
Georgia is in 14th place on the team leaderboard, tied with North Carolina.
"It's not the start you want," head coach Josh Brewer said. "One good thing about this golf course is that it's demanding, and we definitely have a chance to put ourselves back in contention tomorrow. That's the way we're going to approach it. With a good round tomorrow, we have a realistic chance to advance (to NCAAs). We're going to try to play like we did at the SECs and the Liz Murphey and so many other rounds this spring. If we do that, we know come Wednesday we'll be playing for something."
Junior Gabriela Coello and freshman Jo Hua Hung paced Georgia with a pair of 76s, while freshman Harmie Constantino and senior Rinko Mitsunaga both shot 77 to round out the Bulldogs' counting tallies. Freshman Jenny Bae posted a 79. Overall, Coello and Hung are tied for 43rd, Constantino and Mitsunaga are tied for 58th and Bae is tied for 74th.
"It's the spring in the midwest," Brewer said. "It sort of wet, and it's like a U.S. Open golf course where you have to drive it well or you'll find yourself in some really thick rough. We didn't hit it well today, but that's something we can fix. We just have to maintain confidence in our abilities because I know we can get back into contention and have a chance."
Pimnipa Panthong from Kent State shot 4-under 68 to grab the individual lead and also push the Golden Flashes to the top of the team leaderboard. No. 12 Kent State shot 6-under 282 as a team, eight shots better than No. 5 Arizona.
Only 13 stroke separate the teams in sixth – the NCAA Championships cut line – to 16th places. Following the Golden Flashes and the Wildcats are Illinois at 292, No. 20 Michigan State and Indiana at 293, No. 21 Campbell at 294, No. 14 UCLA at 296, No. 4 Stanford and Baylor both at 298, Xavier at 299, Augusta at 302, LSU at 304, Louisville at 305 and the Bulldogs and Tar Heels at 306.
Georgia will be paired with Louisville and North Carolina for Tuesday's second round, teeing off in waves between 9:06-9:50 am ET. Hole-by-hole live scoring updates are available via golfstat.com.
Following Wednesday's third round, the top-six teams and the three golfers highest on the leaderboard who are not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 17-24 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
