BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia shot 303 in Friday's third and final round of stroke play qualifying at the SEC Women's Golf Championships en route to earning the No. 5 seed in the match play bracket to determine the league title.
The Bulldogs finished 54 holes of competition at Greystone Golf and Country Club at 862 and tied for fifth with No. 14 Auburn on the leaderboard. Georgia earned the higher seed by virtue of a better cumulative drop scores over those three rounds.
"All we wanted was a tee time Saturday morning," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Now, our next goal is to get a tee time on Saturday afternoon."
The Bulldogs will take on No. 4 Vanderbilt on Saturday morning in the SEC quarterfinals. The winner of that match will face either No. 12 Florida, the top seed, or Ole Miss in Saturday afternoon's semifinals.
Freshman Jenny Bae led Georgia with a 2-over 74 on Friday. The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 76s from junior Gabriela Coello and freshman Jo Hua Hung and a 77 by freshman Harmie Constantino.
"I wasn't side tracked by anything," Bae said. "I just focused on where I was supposed to hit the ball, my targets and where I was supposed to drop the ball on the green so I would have a better lie and have the best chance to make birdies. That's all I thought about, and I just went at my pace."
On the overall individual leaderboard, Hung tied for 12th at 2-over 218, Coello tied for 25th at 222, Bae tied for 29th at 223, Constantino tied for 34th at 224 and senior Rinko Mitsunaga tied for 47th at 227.
After two days of sunny skies, Friday's round was contested in cool and dreary conditions that featuring spurts of spitting rain. Georgia started slow, playing the first five holes at a combined 11-over, before settling in and covering its final 13 holes at 4-over.
"We were probably a little nervous, anxious, but we responded really well," Brewer said. "It's golf. It's never easy. If you're trying to win a title, yeah, you'd like perfect conditions and everything to be ideal, but it's not that way."
A birdie putt by Hung on the final hole locked up the No. 5 seed. Hung was the last Georgia golfer on the course and hit her third shot on the par-5, 459-yard No. 18 to within 8 feet. After Auburn's final golfer missed a birdie opportunity, Hung calmly sank hers.
"It's neat to see them play their best golf at this time of year," Brewer said. "I think hosting the Liz Murphey and winning a couple of matches will really help us tomorrow. We're excited. We feel like, as they tiebreaker showed, that we're as good one through five as anyone here. We look forward to a great challenge tomorrow."
Georgia and Vanderbilt will tee off at 8:50 a.m. ET on Saturday from hole No. 10. Coello will hit the course first against Morgan Baxendale, followed by Bae versus Louise Yu, Constantino against Auston Kim, Mitsunaga versus Abbey Carlson and Hung taking on Courtney Zeng.
"The way I play is different, but the mindset going into to both (stroke play and match play) is the same," Bae said. "For match play, since I only have to beat my opponent and not worry about the stroke myself, it kind of relieves some pressure. I still focus and try my best, but it is different."
Live scoring will be available via golfstat. Saturday's semifinals will be streamed on SEC Network + from 5:30 p.m. ET through their conclusion. Sunday's championship match will air in its entirety on the SEC Network beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
